ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – In a match that went down to the wire, a frantic comeback by Augustana fell just short and the result was a 24-18 loss to Dubuque in a non-conference contest on Tuesday, January 9 in the Carver Center. The Vikings of first year head coach Tony Willaert trailed 15-6 halfway through the match and came within an eyelash of pulling out the victory.

Freshman Neil O'Shaughnessy (Niles West HS, Niles, Ill.) got Augustana started on a sweet note with a last-second 5-4 win at 157 pounds over Kamen Wilmington. The next two weight classes were won by the visiting Spartans as Quincy Kalkbrenner beat Jacob Poole (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) 9-0 at 165 and JayMore Gonzales pinned sophomore Josh Bush (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) at 1:59 of the 174 pound match.

Trailing 10-3 in the team score, senior Christos Giatras (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) upped his perfect record to 12-0 with a hard-fought 7-6 win over Chris Nielsen at 184. That made the score 10-6 but Dubuque went in front 15-6 when Ethan Cain beat Trystyn Schoonover (Champaign Central HS, Champaign, Ill.) 21-3 at 197.

Sophomore Adarios Jones (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) gave the Vikings life when he recorded a pin at 3:46 of his 285 pound match over Dany Petrela. That narrowed the gap to 15-12.

Augustana gave up six points due to a forfeit at 125 so it was 21-12 when senior Brendan Gould (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) took the mat at 133. Gould picked up four team points with a 9-1 major decision over Printice Walls to make the score 21-16. Junior Dale Charlier (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) wrestled a picture-perfect match against Isaiah Williams at 141 and came away with an 8-1 victory. That closed the gap to 21-19 with one match left.

The 149 pound weight class went into overtime before Dubuque's Zarik Anderson defeated junior Freddy Terranova (Jackson Memorial HS, Jackson, N.J.) to clinch the dual meet victory for the Spartans. Terranova trailed 2-0 early in the match before he hit a four point combination to take a 4-2 lead. It looked like he was going to seal the win for the Vikings when he scored a takedown late in the third period to grab a 6-4 lead but he gave up a reversal to Anderson in the final seconds to send the match into overtime. Anderson scored a takedown on the first flurry to win 8-6 and give Dubuque the team victory.

Augustana falls to 1-8 while Dubuque moves to 6-2. The Vikings will head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa on Thursday, January 11 to face Coe in a dual meet.
