ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana battled back from a 13 point fourth quarter deficit but fell just short on Saturday, January 27 and dropped an 80-74 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin decision to Carthage in the Carver Center. The Lady Reds led the entire game but a late Viking rally made things interesting at the end.

Carthage was ahead by 13 points (65-52) with just 5:29 left in the game when the Vikings ripped off 10 straight points to narrow the gap to just three (65-62). The run started when senior Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) drilled a pair of free throws with 5:15 to play. A basket by sophomore Gabby Galbato (Aurora Christian HS, Geneva, Ill.) at 4:39 made it 65-59 and then junior Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) nailed a three pointer and was fouled. She hit the free throw to complete the four-point play and with 3:55 to go the margin was down to five (65-60. Sophomore Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) scored at 3:16 to make it a three-point game (65-62).

After getting the lead to just three points Augustana had a chance to tie the game but two missed shots cost the Vikings some momentum and they couldn't get any closer.

The game was close in the early going but Carthage took a 10-point lead at halftime thanks to a 25-17 advantage in the second period.

Carthage put four players in double figures as Rachel Szydlowski led the way with 20 points and she also pulled in a game-high 14 rebounds. She was five of nine from the floor and 10 of 11 from the free throw line. Madie Kaelber dropped in 19 points while Bailey Gilbert had 16 points and Morgan Harris had 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Augustana got 14 points from junior Scooter Lopez (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.). Lopez also had seven assists with two steals and three rebounds. Junior Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) was also in double figures with 11 points. The leading rebounder for the Vikings was Galbato with six.

Augustana is now 12-7 on the season and 5-5 in the CCIW while Carthage moves to 14-5 and 7-3. The Vikings are at Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 31 in Bloomington, Illinois for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
