Wheaton's inside game too much for Vikings

grabbed five rebounds in a 79-57 loss to Wheaton.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Wheaton used a dominating inside presence to help secure a 79-57 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin victory over Augustana on Wednesday, January 24 in the Carver Center. The Thunder controlled the backboards, and scored seemingly at will in the lane in a game where the visitors never trailed.
 
Wheaton broke out to a 7-1 lead out of the gate and held an 18-12 advantage after one quarter. The Vikings hung close, however and scored the final four points of the second period to go into halftime down by just 10 (38-28). Wheaton's Hannah Frazier, who would lead all scorers with 27 points, hit a bucket with :12 left to give Wheaton a 38-24 advantage. Senior Meghan Stovall (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) nailed two free throws to make it 38-26 and then junior Scooter Lopez (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) stole the Wheaton inbounds pass and hit Stovall in stride with a perfect pass. Stovall just did beat the clock with a layup to make it 38-28 at intermission.
 
On the first play of the third quarter Augustana's Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) scored to trim the lead to eight points (38-30).
 
Wheaton answered with a 12-3 run to go up 50-33 less than four minutes into the stanza and eventually the lead would grow to 25 (63-38) late in the third.
 
Frazier led the Thunder with 27 points and she was 11 of 20 from the floor and five of six from the free throw line. She pulled down seven rebounds, had two assists and a pair of steals. Teammate Maggie Dansdill dropped in 18 points on seven of 14 from the field, two of three from three point range and two of two from the free throw line. She had a game-high nine rebounds and three steals. Also in double figures for Wheaton was Devin Kyler with 10 points and seven rebounds. Kyler and Jordan Myroth each had six assists for the Thunder.
 
Junior Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) led Augustana with 13 points off the bench and she also had five rebounds. Junior Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) scored 12 points and sophomore Alexis Jones (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.) was also in double digits with 10 points. The rebound leader for the Vikings was freshman Justice Edell (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) with six while Lopez and Edell each had three assists.
 
Augustana is now 12-6 overall and 5-4 in the CCIW and will face Carthage on Saturday, January 27 at 5:00 p.m. in the Carver Center. Wheaton moves to 14-4 and 7-2.
