Junior Taryn VanEarwage had 11 kills in Augustana's loss to Carthage
Friday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Augustana dropped a pair of matches Friday at Coe, falling to Carthage in three sets in a non-conference contest and losing to the host Kohawks in three as well. The Vikings are now 9-9 on the season. The Lady Reds improved to 11-3 and Coe to 9-10 on the year.
CARTHAGE 3, AUGUSTANA 0 (25-23; 25-18; 25-21)
Carthage, who came from behind to defeat Augustana in five sets in Kenosha, Wisconsin on September 19, won in three straight on Friday.
Junior
Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) had a pair of kills as the Vikings jumped in front 8-3 in game one. They still led 19-12 following a
Maissie Musick (Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) service ace, but the Lady Reds rallied to tie it at 21 and take a 22-21 lead on consecutive kills by Megan Behrendt. Augustana tied it one last time at 22-all, but set point in a 25-23 Carthage win came on a Viking attack error.
The Lady Reds went ahead 3-2 in game two and led the rest of the way. A Rachel Kisten kill accounted for set point in a 25-18 Carthage win.
The lead bounced back and forth in game three until the Lady Reds won four straight points to go up 22-18. The Vikings would get no closer than three points the rest of the way and match point in a 25-21 Carthage victory came on a Behrendt kill.
VanEarwage finished with 11 kills. Junior
McKenzie Zambrano (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) dished out 15 assists and Musick had three aces. Senior
Claire Martin (Mother McAuley HS, Orland Park, Ill.) had a team-high 14 digs and VanEarwage and sophomore
Grace Bialobok (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) each recorded three blocks.
COE 3, AUGUSTANA 0 (25-21; 25-17; 25-18)
Coe turned the tables on Augustana in the Vikings' second match of the evening. The Kohawks had fallen in straight sets to Coach
Kelly Bethke's outfit in Cedar Rapids on September 5.
Augustana jumped on top 3-0 in set one, sandwiching kills by senior
Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) and Zambrano around a
Sierra Rood (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) ace. Coe turned things around quickly however, winning 11 of the next 15 points to go up 11-7. The Vikings got as close as two points late in the game, but the Kohawks won it 25-21, with Lindsay Koch's kill providing set point.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with a pair of Westermeyer kills helping the visitors to an early 3-0 lead. Coe came back and eventually took the lead for good at 17-16 on an Augustana service error. The Kohawks won nine of the last 10 points and Madie Heinen's kill closed out a 25-17 Coe win.
A VanEarwage kill gave the Vikings an 11-7 lead in the third game, but the hosts won 12 of the next 15 points to go ahead 19-14. Augustana would get no closer than four points the rest of the way and a Heinen kill accounted for match point in a 25-18 Kowhawk win.
Westermeyer led the Vikings with 14 kills. Zambrano had team highs of 15 assists and nine digs and Martin led with three aces.
Augustana is back in action on Tuesday, October 3, hosting Elmhurst in a 7:00 p.m. match at Carver Center.
