KENOSHA, Wis. – Carthage fought off four match points in the fifth set Tuesday and came back do defeat Augustana 18-16 at Tarble Arena. The Lady Reds improved to 8-3 on the year and 1-0 in the CCIW, while the Vikings dropped to 6-7 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Senior Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) opened the match with consecutive kills, but Carthage won 12 of the next 14 points and went on to a 25-11 win. Rachel Kisten and Megan Fallert combined to block a Bianca Ori (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) kill attempt for set point.

Westermeyer sandwiched a pair of kills around one by senior Maissie Musick (Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) as Augustana jumped in front 3-0 in game two. However, the Lady Reds came right back, eventually taking a 20-15 lead on a Katie Laio kill. The Vikings rallied and took a 24-23 lead when Musick and senior Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) teamed up on a block. Set point in a 25-23 Augustana win came when sophomore Brooke Keegan (Hall HS, Ladd, Ill.) set Kallenberger for a kill.

Carthage led almost wire-to-wire in a 25-16 third-set win. Shannon Kebisek's kill accounted for set point.

Game four was tight the whole way. Only twice—when the Vikings led 10-7 and 16-13—did either team take a lead of more than two points. Augustana finally took the lead for good at 22-21 on a Westermeyer kill. Junior Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) delivered set point in a 25-23 win with a kill off a Keegan set.

The Vikings bounced back from a 4-1 deficit in game five to lead 8-6 at the turnaround. The advantage eventually grew to 14-10, but the Lady Reds roared back, getting kills from Kisten, Fallert and Kebisek to tie it at 14-all. With the set tied at 16, Kebisek had another kill and Autumn McGee followed with a service ace for match point.

Westermeyer finished with 18 kills and sophomore Grace Bialobok (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Homewood, Ill.) added 10. Keegan dished out 21 assists and junior McKenzie Zambrano (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) 19.

Defensively, VanEarwage recorded 20 digs, while senior Claire Martin (Mother McAuley HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and junior Sierra Rood (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) had 17 each. Musick led the way with five blocks.

This weekend, Augustana travels to Naperville, Illinois to compete in the CCIW/WIAC Crossover. The Vikings face Wisconsin-Stout on Friday, September 22 at 7:00 p.m. and 17th-ranked Wisconsin-Stevens Point on Saturday, September 23 at 10:00 a.m.
