Senior Emily Westermeyer had a total of 32 kills Friday as Augustana
split matches with Central and Dominican at Carver Center.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill.. – Augustana opened the home portion of its 2017 volleyball season Friday, defeating Central in five sets before falling in four to Dominican at Carver Center. The Vikings, now 4-6 on the year, head to Platteville, Wisconsin on Saturday, September 16 to face Hamline at 10:30 a.m. and UW-Platteville at 2:30 p.m.
AUGUSTANA 3, CENTRAL 2 (20-25; 25-19; 25-19; 19-25; 15-12)
Augustana went the distance to snap a six-match Dutch winning streak in the opener. The Vikings led 8-5 at the turnaround of the fifth set, but Central won seven of the first eight points coming out of the break to go up 12-9. However, senior
Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) answered with five kills as Augustana took the final six points to win 15-12.
The opening set went the Dutch's way 25-20. They won four straight points to take a 12-9 lead and the hosts would get no closer than three points the rest of the way. Kylie Gerstein and Jenna Dille teamed up on a block for set point.
The Vikings took the lead for good in set two at 10-9. Five straight points later extended the advantage to 18-12 before the Dutch eventually trimmed it to 21-19. Augustana closed it out with the final four points however, with Westermeyer's sixth kill of the game providing set point.
Senior
Maissie Musick (Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) had two kills and a pair of service aces and classmate
Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Ill.) a kill and block as the Vikings jumped in front 14-6 in game three. Central won seven of the next eight points to cut the deficit to 15-13, but that's as close as the Dutch would get. Musick's third ace of the game accounted for set point in another 25-19 win.
Central evened the match at two games apiece with a 25-19 win of its own in set four. Melissa Miller had four of her team-high 16 kills and a set point came on a Dille kill.
Westermeyer finished with 21 kills and a .388 attack percentage, while Musick had marks of eight and .412, respectively, along with five aces and four blocks. Setters
McKenzie Zambrano (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and
Brooke Keegan (Hall HS, Ladd, Ill.) dished out 23 and 20 assists, respectively. Senior
Claire Martin (Mother McAuley HS, Orland Park, Ill.) led with 19 digs and Kallenberger equaled Musick's four blocks, including two of the solo variety.
DOMINICAN 3, AUGUSTANA 1 (17-25; 25-22; 25-14; 25-17)
The Stars bounced back from a setback in the first game, to win the next three handily.
Augustana took a 23-12 lead and won the opening set 25-17.
In the second, Dominican jumped in front 7-1, but the Vikings responded to a
Kelly Bethke timeout with 5-0 run highlighted by three more Westermeyer kills. Augustana took a 14-12 lead with a 4-0 run later in the game and still led 19-18 after a Star attack error. Dominican regained the lead for good though on consecutive Viking setting errors and an Amanda Ricca kill provided set point in a 25-22 Star win that evened the match at a game apiece.
Kendyl Todd had seven kills as Dominican took the third game 25-14. Set point came on an Anastasia Labadessa kill.
Augustana took a 5-1 lead in the fourth, but the Stars rallied to go up 7-6 on a Mallory Jones ace. After the Vikings tied it at seven, a Gillian Jones kill sparked a 5-0 run that gave Dominican the lead for good. Nine straight points gave the Stars a 22-10 lead. Behind a kill and two aces by
Victoria Biggerstaff (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.), Augustana won six straight points to pull within 22-16, but a Ricca kill stanched the bleeding and match point came on an Alex Kisten kill.
Westermeyer led the Vikings with 11 kills and junior
Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) added nine. Keegan had a team-high 18 assists. Musick was in on four blocks and Martin and Zambrano shared the team lead in digs with 13 each.
Todd led Dominican with 16 kills and Labadessa with 38 assists. Megan Parker recorded 31 digs and Stephanie Cole seven blocks.
