ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Sophomore Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) pulled out a 6-4 third-set win over Grinnell's Ali Hickey at third singles Saturday, lifting Augustana to a 5-4 win over the Pioneers at the Lower Campus Courts. Badawi—a veteran on Coach Jon Miedema's new-look Viking outfit—won her first set with Hickey 6-3 before falling in the second, 4-6.

Augustana trailed 2-1 after doubles play. Grinnell won at the top two positions. Amelia Cogan and Abigail Nielsen downed junior Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and freshman Margaret Chadick (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.) 8-3 at number one and Milica Cvrkota and Hickey bested Badawi and freshman Faith Johnson (Harker Heights HS, Harker Heights, Texas) 8-6 at number two. Two more Viking freshmen—Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.)—picked up the first win for the hosts, defeating Anushka Joshi and Brenda Guan 8-1 at third doubles.

In singles, Nielsen scored a 6-0, 6-2 win over freshman Maleeha Chowdhury (Rock Canyon HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) at number four and Timm and Johnson downed Cogan and Lily Hamilton 6-0, 6-4 and 6-2, 6-2, respectively, at numbers two and six. Bullen was a 6-4, 7-5 winner over Joshi at fifth singles and Schaffer—one of just three non-freshmen on Miedema's 12-player roster—suffered a tight 7-5, 7-5 setback to Cvrkota at number one, setting the stage for Badawi's clincher.

Augustana is back in action later Saturday afternoon, hosting Edgewood.
