appearance in the last three years.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana will open the 2017 NCAA Division III National Women's Tennis Tournament against a familiar foe in a familiar setting. The Vikings of head coach
Jon Miedema will take their 24-6 record into a 9:00 a.m. match on Friday, May 12 against Coe at the University of Chicago.
Augustana handled Coe 7-2 at home on April 1 of this year and the Vikings have won two straight against the KoHawks after recording a 9-0 win in 2015-16. The all-time series between the two teams is tied 8-8.
When Miedema's team takes the court on Friday, it will be at the same University of Chicago tennis complex where the Vikings made their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2015. That year Augustana beat Edgewood 5-0 in the opening round before being stopped by the University of Chicago 5-0 in the second round.
This year the winner of the Augustana/Coe match will once again draw the host Maroons. The other teams in the regional are Gustavus Adolphus, St. Norbert, Kenyon and Franciscan.
The Vikings qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament by virtue of a heart-pounding 5-4 decision over Wheaton on Saturday, April 29 to win the qualifying spot from the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.
The Vikings beat Carroll 5-1 on Friday, April 28 to set up the match with Wheaton. Augustana is now 24-6 overall and will wait for the assignment from the NCAA in terms of where they will be playing. The NCAA Division III field will not be announced until Monday, May 8.
Augustana qualified for the NCAA Division III Tournament in 2015 with a 5-4 win over Wheaton and the Vikings went on to defeat Edgewood 5-0 in the opening round before falling to Chicago 5-0 in the next round. Last year Miedema's team dropped a 5-4 decision to Wheaton in the AQ final.
