Sophomore Madeline Lombardi's win at sixth singles Friday capped a 5-0
Augustana win over Coe in the first round of the NCAA Division III
Championships in Chicago, Illinois.

CHICAGO, Ill. – Augustana advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Women's Tennis Championships Friday with a 5-0 win over Coe at the University of Chicago's Stagg Field Tennis Courts. The Vikings improved to 25-6 on the year, setting a new single-season school record for victories. In addition, Coach Jon Miedema moved past Larry Flaherty as the winningest head coach in program history. Augustana is 122-50 (.709) in six seasons under Miedema, while Flaherty had a record of 121-51 (.703) from 1992-2001.

The Vikings move on to face the host Maroons—ranked ninth in the nation—in the round of 32 on Saturday, May 13 at 10:00 a.m.

Senior Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and freshman Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) got Miedema's bunch off on the right foot, scoring an 8-2 win at third doubles over the Kohawk duo of Lakyn Boltz and Ella White.

Senior Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomore Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) were also 8-2 winners at number two, defeating Haley Resnick and Kaitllin Fosler.

The Vikings completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 win at number one. Senior Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomore Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) defeated Lauren French and Sarah Lasecki.

Wins by Badawi and Lombardi locked up the second NCAA Tournament victory in Augustana program history. The Vikings defeated Edgewood 5-0 in the first round in 2015. Badawi was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Fosler at fourth singles and Lombardi downed White 7-5, 6-2 at number six.

Andonova was leading her fifth singles match against Boltz 7-5, 2-1 when play ended and Schafer had a 6-3, 2-6, 4-2 lead over Lasecki at number three. At number two, Dana Goggin and French were just about to start a third set after Dana had bounced back from a 1-6 loss to win 6-4 in set two. Lauren Goggin won her first set 6-4 over Resnick at number one and trailed 2-4 in the second at the completion of play.

Saturday's dual will be a rematch. Augustana and Chicago played on April 7 at the Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin, with the Maroons coming out on top 8-1. Schaefer, at third singles, picked up the lone Viking win.
