Sophomore Jack Morkin won twice in singles and once in doubles on
Sunday, April 2 as the Vikings defeated Millikin (5-4) and Illinois
Wesleyan (9-0) to move to 8-7 overall and 3-0 in the CCIW.
Augustana took its men's tennis show on the road on Sunday, April 2 and the result was a pair of College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin victories in two different cities. The Vikings started the morning in Decatur, Illinois and the result was a hard-fought 5-4 win over Millikin at the Fairview Tennis Center. The day concluded with a 9-0 whitewash over Illinois Wesleyan at the Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois.
With the two wins, head coach
Jon Miedema's crew goes above .500 overall at 8-7 and moves to 3-0 in the CCIW. The Vikings will face Wheaton on Tuesday, April 4 at home beginning at 3:30 p.m.
AUGUSTANA 5, MILLIKIN 4
DECATUR, Ill. – Strength in singles saved the Vikings in this one as they overcame a 2-1 deficit in doubles to rally past Millikin and score a 5-4 win on Sunday, April 2 at the Fairview Tennis Center in Decatur, Illinois.
The lone doubles point came at number one where the junior team of
Samuel Totten (Normal University HS, Normal, Ill.) and
Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) rolled past Jacob Palley and Jacob Hamilton by a score of 8-1. The other two doubles matches didn't turn out so well for Augustana.
At number two the team of sophomore
Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and senior
Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) dropped an 8-4 decision to Emerick Fulton and Connor Sacks. The Vikings number three team of freshmen
Scott Daluga (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) and
David Gunther Treis (Brookfield Central HS, Brookfield, Wis.) lost 8-3 to Greg Schoeppe and Dane Pierantoni.
When the scene shifted to singles Augustana won at two through four and at number six. Pohl took care of Hamilton 6-4; 6-4 at number two and Morkin beat Sacks 6-0; 6-4 at number three. Woolf picked up a 6-0; 6-4 victory over Fulton at number four. Daluga beat Logan Bennett 6-1; 6-2 at number six.
Totten lost 4-6; 4-6 at number one to Palley and senior
Nicholas Prabhakar (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) fell 0-6; 4-6 to Schoeppe at number five.
AUGUSTANA 9, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN 0
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The Vikings made short work of the Titans in a 9-0 victory as the nightcap of an unusual central Illinois double header on Sunday, April 2. After beating the Big Blue from Decatur in the morning, Miedema's team made its way up Route 51 and took care of the Titans before heading back to the Quad Cities.
Augustana jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles action. Totten and Pohl beat Kurt Meyer and Ryan Yoo 8-4 at number one and Morkin and Woolf beat Calen Crim and Jimmy Kase 8-2 at number two. The number three team of Daluga and Prabhakar defeated Yash Thacker and Sid Saxena 8-0.
Totten beat Meyer 6-1; 6-1 at number one and Pohl defeated Crim 6-0; 6-1 at number two. The number three spot was Morkin's and he defeated Yoo 6-1; 6-1. Daluga moved into the number four spot for this match and he beat Kase 6-0; 6-0. Prabhakar took care of Thacker 6-0; 6-0 at number five and Gunther Treis beat Saxena 6-0; 6-0 at number six.
