at both doubles and singles as Vikings
snapped three-match losing streak with
9-0 victory over Cornell on Thursday,
April 13.
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – After losing three matches last weekend to nationally ranked opponents at the Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin, head coach
Jon Miedema was anxious for his 15
th ranked (regionally) Augustana team to get back on track. That is exactly what the Vikings did on Thursday, April 13 in Mount Vernon, Iowa with a 9-0 win over a good Cornell team that came into the match with an 18-5 overall record.
In moving to 21-5 overall Augustana left no doubt against the Rams, jumping out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and then cruising to six consecutive straight set wins in singles.
Senior
Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomore
Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) defeated Julia Thome and Shashanna Moll 8-4 at number one doubles while senior
Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomore
Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) beat Gabriella Ferro and Janice Elkerton 8-2 at number two. The number three team of senior
Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) and freshman
Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) defeated Abbey Nelson and Megan Pope 8-2.
Lauren Goggin beat Thorne 6-1; 6-3 at number one singles and
Dana Goggin took care of Moll 6-2; 6-3. Schaffer was a 6-1; 6-0 winner over Ferro at number three and Badawi defeated nelson 6-3; 6-2 at number four. Andonova was a 6-0; 6-2 winner over Elkerton at number five and Lombardi beat Anne Seng 6-1; 6-2 at number six.
Augustana will be back in action again on Sunday, April 23 with an unusual double header. The Vikings will play Carleton at 9:00 a.m. in Northfield, Minnesota and after finishing that will drive down to Decorah, Iowa for a 3:00 p.m. match against Luther.
