Junior Eric Pohl became just the 16th player in
Augustana men's tennis history to go past 100
career wins on Thursday, April 13 against Cornell.
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – Junior
Eric Pohl moved into the second century of career wins on Thursday, April 13 against Cornell in Mount Vernon, Iowa but it wasn't enough as Augustana dropped a narrow 5-4 decision to the Rams. Pohl, who had equaled the 100 win mark last weekend in a win over Wisconsin-LaCrosse, upped his total to 101 with a doubles victory on Thursday.
He teamed with his usual partner, fellow junior
Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.) for a hard fought 9-8 (7-2 in the tiebreaker) win over Gabriel Souza and Shoma Kishimoto at number one doubles. Of Pohl's 101 wins at Augustana, 52 of them have come with Totten as a doubles partner. Pohl is 40-47 in singles; mostly at number two and 61-27 in doubles play during his career with the majority of those coming at number one. He becomes just the 16
th men's player in Augustana history to eclipse 100 career wins.
The Vikings took a 2-1 lead after doubles as seniors
Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and
Jonathon Elsey (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) won another tight match by a score of 9-8 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) over Tucker Barnes and Nick VanDenHandel at number two. The number three team of sophomore
Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and freshman
Scott Daluga (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision at number three to Aditya Goyal and Hayden Dzurisin.
In singles, Augustana could only win at numbers one and six as Cornell won four points to take the match.
Totten beat Souza 6-1; 7-5 at number one and Daluga beat VanDenHandel 6-3; 6-4 at number six.
Pohl dropped a 6-2; 6-1 decision to Dzurisin at number two and Woolf fell 6-3; 6-4 to Kishimoto at number three. Senior
Nicholas Prabhakar (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) lost 6-3; 6-2 at number four to Goyal and Elsey was defeated by Barnes 6-4; 6-1.
The Vikings, who had won five of their last six matches prior to falling to the Rams, are now 10-9 overall while Cornell moved to 14-10. Augustana will be in action again on Wednesday, April 19 at home against St. Ambrose at 4:00 p.m.
