Senior Kaycee Kallenberger tied a single
game school record with 21 rebounds in
the Vikings 67-63 loss at Wheaton on Wednesday,
February 8.
WHEATON, Ill. – Senior post player
Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) tied an Augustana school record on Wednesday, February 8 but it wasn't enough for the Vikings to pull out a win in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action in Wheaton, Illinois. The host Wheaton Thunder came away with a 67-63 win despite Kallenberger's heroics.
Kallenberger scored 20 points, pulled down 21 rebounds and blocked four shots in 31 minutes of action. Her 21 rebounds tied the Augustana school record that was originally set on January 16, 1993 by Keesha Brooks against Carthage. Kallenberger was 10-18 from the field for the game and she also had one assist.
The Vikings struggled from the floor in the contest, shooting just .333 (25-75) for the game. From beyond the three point arc Augustana hit just three of 22 (.136).
After the two teams were tied 18-18 after one quarter, Wheaton outscored the visitors 19-6 in the second to take a 37-24 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Vikings turned the tables in the third quarter and when sophomore
Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) scored with just two ticks left on the clock the lead was trimmed to 48-44. In that third period Augustana outscored the Thunder 20-11.
Wheaton scored the first 13 points of the fourth quarter to take a seemingly commanding 17 point lead (61-44) with 4:47 left to play. The Vikings answered that explosion with a run of their own, scoring 19 of the game's final 25 points but it was not enough as they eventually fell by four (67-63).
The only other Augustana player in double figures besides Kallenberger was Anderson, who also had six assists, with 12. Senior Jennifer VanWatermeulen
(United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) had eight points while sophomore
Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) had six points and two steals.
Senior
Mikayla Fallon (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) and freshman
Alexis Jones (Epic Academy, Chicago, Ill.) each had seven rebounds as Augustana won the battle of the boards by a substantial 53-37 margin.
Katie McDaniels led Wheaton in scoring with 24 points. The Thunder was red-hot in the first half, shooting .517 (15-29) from the floor.
Augustana is now 15-7 overall and 8-5 in the CCIW while Wheaton is 17-4 and 10-2. The Vikings will travel to Waukesha, Wisconsin on Saturday, February 11 to face Carroll at 5:00 p.m.
