ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – In a battle between a pair of nationally ranked teams, Cornell defeated Augustana 23-15 on Friday, December 15 in the Carver Center in Rock Island, Illinois. The Rams won the final two weight classes to overcome a 15-13 deficit after the 184 pound match.
 
At 184 pounds Augustana senior Christos Giatras (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.), the number two ranked wrestler in the nation, survived a hard-fought 8-6 decision over Bryce Oveson of Cornell. Giatras moved his record to 9-0 with the win, which gave the Vikings a short-lived 15-13 lead.
 
Augustana started the match with junior Travis Pulse (Davenport Assumption HS, Milan, Ill.) picking up a forfeit but Cornell got wins in the next two weight classes to tie things at 6-6 following the 141 pound weight class. Jeremy Sorem of Cornell defeated Josh Diehl (Oskaloosa HS, Oskaloosa, Iowa) 12-8 at 133 and third ranked Josh Martin of Cornell beat number 14 Brendan Gould (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) 10-3 at 141.
 
That tied the match at 6-6 but junior Daniel Terronez (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) defeated pulled off a wild 11-9 overtime decision over Leonard Bloom at 149 to give Augustana a 9-6 advantage.
 
Cornell won at 157 and 165 to take a 13-9 lead before the Vikings got a 9-2 win by seventh ranked Trace Timmons (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) over Wylie Allen. Timmons moved to 14-4 on the season and his victory closed the gap to 13-12 heading into Giatras' match.
 
After Giatras won to give Augustana the lead, Cornell picked up a pin at 197 pounds and a major decision at 285 to seal the win.
 
Augustana is now 1-4 on the season while Cornell moved to 3-3. The Vikings will be in action again at the National Duals in Fort Wayne, Indiana on January 4-5.
