Vikings win all 11 events in win over Monmouth

the winning 200 freestyle relay Friday in Augustana's win at Monmouth.

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Augustana completely dominated Monmouth in women's swimming action on Friday, November 17 by winning all nine individual events and both relays in a 165.5-37.5 swamping of the Scots. This contest, which was held in Monmouth, Illinois, was never close as the Vikings moved their dual meet record to 4-0 on the season.
 
Three Augustana swimmers were double winners in individual events. Senior Nicole Olsen (Plainfield East HS, Romeoville, Ill.) dominated in the sprints as she won the 50 freestyle in :26.22 and the 100 freestyle in :58.85. She also anchored the 200 freestyle relay to victory in a time of 1:48.83. She was joined on that relay by junior Rachel Heah (Convent Green Lane, Penang, Malaysia), senior Kelly Wingerson (Rock Island HS, Cedar Rapids, Iowa) and junior Taylor Campbell (Tuscola HS, Tuscola, Ill.).
 
Heah also won two individual events as she took the 200 individual medley in 2:25.50 and the 100 backstroke in 1:05.93. Wingerson was second in both the 100 (:59.02) and 500 freestyle (6:02.98) and Campbell placed third in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.75.
 
Senior Kristin Schoenecker (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) won both the 200 freestyle (2:08.39) and the 500 freestyle (5:46.65).
 
Sophomore Gabrielle Ainsworth (Rockton Hononegah HS, South Beloit, Ill.) took the 100 butterfly in 1:03.65 and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:26.22). She also handled the third leg of the winning 200 medley relay team. She was joined by sophomore Carissa Boerboom (Rosemount HS, Inver Grove Heights, Minn.), senior Sara Hovren (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore Morgan Brockhouse (Metamora HS, Metamora, Ill.) in recording a time of 1:58.12 in the first event of the night.
 
Hovren won the 100 breaststroke in 1:16.39 and Boerboom took second in the 100 butterfly (1:06.94) and 100 backstroke (1:08.46) while Brockhouse was second in the 200 freestyle (2:10.92).
 
Freshman Marissa Jaskae (Waubonsie Valley HS, Aurora, Ill.) won the first individual event of the meet when she led a one-two-three Viking sweep in the 1000 freestyle. Jaskae took first in 12:22.42 while freshman Rebecca Schaechter (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was second (12:27.38) and junior Victoria Frank (Hinsdale South HS, Willowbrook, Ill.) placed third (12:38.85). Frank was also third in the 100 butterfly in 1:17.62.
 
Sophomore Patti Grod (Glenbrook North HS, Northbrook, Ill.) was second in the 50 freestyle in :26.80. Sophomore Chelsea Brandt (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) took second in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.74). Sophomore Grace O'Shea (Sacred-Heart Griffin HS, Springfield, Ill.) was third in the 500 freestyle in 6:06.77.
 
Augustana will not have much time to rest on its win over the Fighting Scots. The Vikings are in action on Saturday, November 18 at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational in Bloomington, Illinois.
