Faith Johnson won at number six singles and number three doubles
as the Vikings stayed undefeated in CCIW action with an 8-1 win over
North Park on Sunday, October 8.
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Despite playing without number one singles player
Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.), Augustana stayed perfect in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin with an 8-1 win over North Park in women's tennis action on Sunday, October 8 at the Lower Campus Courts. This match was originally set for one day earlier but was moved back a day due to the threat of rain on Saturday, October 7.
Neither the delay nor the absence of Schaffer from the lineup due to an injury slowed down the Vikings as they moved their overall record to 8-1 and their CCIW mark to 6-0. North Park is now 3-7 overall and 1-6 in league play.
The Vikings did drop a match at number one singles where junior
Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) and freshman
Maleeha Chowdhury (Rock Canyon HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) fell 8-3 to Vilde Olvin and Juviel Vinluan. That would be the lone blemish for Augustana however as the number two doubles team of freshman
Annie Timm (Prairie Ridge HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) and sophomore
Zeana Badawi (Hinsdale Central HS, Burr Ridge, Ill.) defeated Linnea Love and Linn Viuhkonen 8-1.
At number three doubles the freshman duo of
Faith Johnson (Harker Heights HS, Harker Heights, Texas) and
Leraaen Abbott (Belvidere North HS, Belvidere, Ill.) posted an 8-0 win over Grace Pavlak and McKenzie Harrison.
The Vikings cruised in singles, winning all six matches.
Timm moved into the number one spot vacated by Schaffer's absence and she defeated Olvin 6-3; 6-0. Badawi took care of Vinluan 6-1; 6-1. Chowdhury toughed out a 6-1; 7-5 decision at number three against Viuhkonen.
Freshman
Morgan Bullen (Colorado Academy, Lakewood, Colo.) beat Katie Chleboun 6-1; 6-2 at number four and freshman
Margaret Chadick (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.) defeated Love 6-0; 6-0. Johnson beat Harrison 6-0; 6-0.
Augustana will be in action again on Saturday, October 14 against Wheaton and then will come back home to face Illinois Wesleyan on Sunday, October 15.
