Vikings down Wheaton in four sets

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana bounced back from a first-set loss Tuesday to take three straight from Wheaton in a CCIW match at Carver Center. Coach Kelly Bethke's Vikings improved to 12-15 overall and 3-5 in the league. The Thunder dropped to 4-20 on the season and 1-6 in the conference.
 
Emily Potts had four kills as the visitors took the first set 25-19. A Deborah Smith kill gave Wheaton the lead for good at 16-15. Potts eventually finished the game off with consecutive kills.
 
Augustana won 15 of 17 points to go from a 3-3 tie to an 18-5 lead in set two. Senior Maissie Musick (Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) had two kills and two blocks as the Vikings won eight straight points. Junior Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.), who served the final seven, finished off the run with an ace. Sophomore Brooke Harmon (Lindbergh HS, St. Louis, Mo.) had three aces in a 6-0 Augustana run later.
 
The Thunder rallied to within 23-19, but a Grace Bialobok (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Homewood, Ill.) kill finally finished off a 25-20 Viking win.
 
Senior Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) had three kills as the hosts jumped in front 7-1 in game three. Bialobok had two kills and a block in a 6-0 Augustana run that gave the Vikings a 20-8 lead and Harmon and Kallenberger combined on a block for set point in a 25-15 Augustana win.
 
In game four, Wheaton scored consecutive points just once—when it broke a 5-5 tie to go up 7-5 on a Potts kill. The Vikings took 20 of the final 23 points to win 25-10. Senior Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) had five kills for the game and VanEarwage four and match point came on a Westermeyer block.
 
Westermeyer led the way with 11 kills, while VanEarwage added 10 and Bialobok nine. Junior McKenzie Zambrano (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) dished out a season-high 28 assists and Harmon, VanEarwage and senior Claire Martin (Mother McAuley HS, Orland Park, Ill.) each had three of Augustana's 11 aces. Defensively, Martin recorded a season-high 32 digs and VanEarwage chipped in with 22. Westermeyer, Bialobok and Harmon were in on three blocks apiece.
 
Bethke's bunch will close out the regular season this weekend, hosting the Pumpkin Bash at Carver Center. The Vikings take on Simpson at 4:00 p.m. and Illinois College at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, October 27. The Illinois College contest is designated "High School Night."
