Augustana falls in three at 12th-ranked Millikin

Sophomore Brooke Keegan led Augustana with eight assists Friday,
but Augustana fell in three sets at 12th-ranked Millikin.

DECATUR, Ill. – Erin Syversen had 16 kills Friday to lead Millikin to a three-set victory over Augustana at the Griswold Center. The Vikings dropped to 11-14 on the season and 2-5 in the CCIW, while the 12th-ranked Big Blue improved to 22-6 overall and 6-0 in the league.
 
The hosts broke open a tight first set with a 5-0 run  midway through. An Emily Seegmiller kill finished the spurt that put Millikin up 17-12. Maddi Holland's kill closed out a 25-17 Big Blue win. Syversen finished the game with six kills.
 
A pair of Grace Bialobok (Homewood-Flossmor HS, Homewood, Ill.) kills helped Augustana go up 5-3 in game two, but Millikin came roaring back, winning seven straight points to take a 10-5 lead. Syversen had two of her half-dozen kills in the run. Consecutive Maissie Musick (Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) service aces and another by sophomore Brooke Harmon (Lindbergh HS, St. Louis, Mo.) pulled the Vikings to within 14-13, but the Big Blue answered with seven of the next nine points. Set point in a 25-19 Millikin win came on an Augustana attack error.
 
Syversen's last kill of the match put the Big Blue ahead 17-11 in the third set. The Big Blue won the final five points to take the game 25-14.
 
Senior Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley Ill.) led the Vikings with six kills and junior Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) added five, along with a team-best 11 digs. Sophomore Brooke Keegan (Hall HS, Ladd, Ill.) had eight assists and Musick three aces.
 
Seegmiller complimented Syversen's performance with 10 kills. Emily Mihalkanin had a match-high 33 assists and Merideth Artime a match-best 14 digs.
 
Coach Kelly Bethke's squad wraps up CCIW play on Tuesday, October 24. Augustana hosts Wheaton at Carver Center at 7:00 p.m.
