Viking men suffer first dual meet loss at Carthage

Freshman Adam Smith turned in a winning effort in the 1000 freestyle
Saturday, but Augustana suffered a 184-93 setback at Carthage

Sophomore Jared Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) and freshman Adam Smith (Palatine HS, Palatine, Ill.) picked up individual wins in Augustana's 184-93 loss at Carthage Saturday. Ekberg took the 200 backstroke in 1:56.88 and Smith won the 1000 freestyle in 10:27.63.
 
Ekberg also turned in a second-place performance in the 100 backstroke, finishing a tenth of a second back in :52.47.
 
Augustana took second and third in four events. In the 200 breaststroke, seniors Ian Disteldorf (Brother Rice HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) and Robert Chaney (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) swam 2:15.55 and 2:26.75, respectively. Sophomore Kyle Workman (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) and freshman John McDonaugh (Glenbrook North HS, Northbrook, Ill.) went 2-3 in the 500 freestyle with respective times of 5:31.46 sand 5:50.57. In the 100 butterfly, junior Chris Wilson (Bradford on Tone, United Kingdom) was second in :57.55 and freshman Zach Ogden (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) was third in :58.56. Sophomore Bryan Haage's (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) 2:01.03 was good for second in the 200 individual medley, while Smith finished  third in 2:06.59.
 
Disteldorf took second in the 200 breaststroke (1:00.58) and freshman Ben Peinsipp (St. Viator HS, Lombard, Ill.) swam a second-place :50.35 in the 100 freestyle. Sophomore Tom Pham (Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam) scored 91.44 to finish second in one-meter diving.
 
The 200 medley relay unit of Ekberg, Disteldorf, Haage and Speechley took second with a 1:36.76 effort.
 
Haage swam a third-place 1:48.19 in the 200 freestyle and junior Jacob Speechley (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) was third in the 50 freestyle ( :22.37) and 200 backstroke ( 2:02.17).
 
The Vikings will be back in action on January 20-21 at the Grinnell Invitational in Grinnell, Iowa.
