Wabash and Lake Forest best Vikings to open spring season

Junior Sam Totten won both of his matches at number one singles Saturday,
but Augustana dropped dual meets to Wabash and Lake Forest in
Crawfordsville, Indiana.

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. – Junior Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.) won both of his singles matches Saturday, but couldn't help Augustana escape defeat in a pair of duals at Wabash College. The host Little Giants bested the Vikings 8-1 and Lake Forest won a pair of crucial three-set singles matches to secure a 5-4 win over Coach Jon Miedema's bunch.
 
Augustana will host a dual meet with Monmouth at the Quad City Tennis Club in Moline, Illinois on Friday, February 3.
 
WABASH 8, AUGUSTANA 1
 
Totten recorded the Vikings' only win against Wabash, taking down William Reifeis 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 at first singles.
 
Little Giant Michael Makio was a four, four winner over junior Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) at number two and Patrick McAuley beat sophomore Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) 7-6 (7-4), 6-0 at number three.
 
At fourth singles, Wabash's Jordan Greenwell downed freshman David Gunther Treis (Brookfield Central HS, Brookfield, Wis.) love and one, while Nicholas Pollock bested sophomore Alex Riddle (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) love and two at number five.
 
Little Giant Andrew Denning was a 6-1, 6-0 winner over freshman Scott Daluga (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) at sixth singles.
 
Wabash swept the doubles matches. Riddle and Gunther came closest to breaking through, falling 8-7 (7-5) to Denning and Mazin Hakim at number three. Totten and Pohl, at number one and Morkin and Daluga, at number two, both dropped 8-4 decisions. Reifeis and McAuley and Makio and Greenwell, were the respective victors in those matches.
 
LAKE FOREST 5, AUGUSTANA 4
 
Narrow losses at second and third singles cost the Vikings in their 5-4 dual meet setback to Lake Forest. Trevor Allen defeated Pohl 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 at number two and Morkin fell 4-6, 6-2 6-4 to Nick Zazove at number three.
 
Totten and Daluga each recorded 6-0, 6-1 wins at first and sixth singles, respectively. Totten defeated Dan Pivonka and Daluga handled Nick Rehm.
 
At fourth and fifth singles, Treis and Riddle, respectively, both lost in straight sets. Forester Ellis Lora-Arceo defeated Treis four and one and Dragan Trivanovic bested Riddle 6-4, 7-5.
 
Augustana took two of three doubles matches. Totten and Pohl scored an 8-3 victory over Pivonka and Lora-Arceo at number one and Treis and Riddle were 8-5 winners over Rehm and Trivanovic at number three. Allen and Zazove downed Morkin and Daluga 8-5 at second doubles.
