Adarios Jones scored a technical fall at 285 pounds Friday to lift
Augustana to a 23-21 win over 11th-ranked UW-Platteville.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Trailing by six points with two weight classes remaining at Wisconsin-Platteville Friday, Augustana needed two wins along with some bonus points to pull out a victory over the 11th-ranked Pioneers. That's exactly what the Vikings got, with junior
Christos Giatras (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) scoring a decision at 197 and sophomore
Adarios Jones (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) clinching the win with a technical fall at 285. Coach
Eric Juergens' squad improved to 8-5 on the year, while UW-Platteville dropped to 4-2.
The Pioneers led 21-15 after Jon Goetz and Grant Wedepohl recorded consecutive falls at 174 and 184, respectively. Giatras (15-4), who moved up from his usual 184-pound slot, defeated Cody Meyer 7-4 at 197 to draw Augustana to within 21-18. That gave Jones a chance for the clincher and the nation's eighth-ranked 285-pounder won for the 23rd time in 24 matches this year, rolling up a 22-7 margin in 5:41 against Tyler Pasker. The five-point technical fall lifted the Vikings to victory by a score of 23-21.
After freshman Trenton Jackson
(Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) fell 7-4 to Zachary Stenger at 125, sophomore
Brendan Gould (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) picked up a forfeit win at 133 to put Augustana on top 6-3. Gould is now 20-10 on the year.
UW-Platteville regained a 9-6 lead when Alex Costello pinned sophomore
Freddy Terranova (Memorial HS, Jackson, N.J.) in 6:39 at 141. However, the Vikings responded with three straight wins to go back up 15-9. Senior
Matt Sears (Marist HS, New Lenox, Ill.) improved to 16-10 this season with a 14-8 win over Carter Barkema at 149. At 157, freshman
Josh Bush (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was a 5-3 winner over Trevor Harsh and junior
Trace Timmons (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) was a 7-5 sudden victor over Isaac Brosinski at 165, bumping his record to 18-6 on the year.
Goetz pulled the Pioneers into a 15-all tie, pinning freshman
Bo Bauer (Olympia HS, Stanford, Ill.) in 2:49 and Wedepohl, ranked ninth in the nation at 184, gave Platteville a 21-15 lead with a 5:00 fall over sophomore
Jacob Poole (Marist HS, Chicago, Ill.).
Juergens' outfit will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, January 27-28 at Wheaton's Pete Willson Invitational.
