Senior Mikayla Fallon led the Vikings
with 16 points in a 91-76 loss at Millikin
on Saturday, January 21.
DECATUR, Ill. – A frantic fourth quarter rally was not enough for the Augustana women on Saturday, January 21 in Decatur, Illinois as the Vikings fell to Millikin by a score of 91-76 in the Griswold Center. Head coach
Mark Beinborn's squad outscored the home team 28-18 in the fourth quarter but the margin, that at times reached as high as 29 points, was too much to overcome.
Augustana led 7-6 in the early going after a basket from sophomore
Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) with 5:02 left in the first quarter. Millikin went on a 14-2 run and with less than a minute to play in the first stanza the Big Blue led by 11 (20-9). The first period led with Millikin on top 22-12 and at halftime the home team's margin was 11 points (45-34).
It was in the third quarter where the Big Blue put the game on ice with a 28-14 blitz that was helped out by a 22-5 run over the first seven minutes that pushed the lead to 28 points (67-39) with 3:16 left.
Augustana was hampered by poor shooting as the Vikings connected on just .351 (28-73) from the field while Millikin was a crisp .478 (32-67) from the floor. The Big Blue hit 19 of 22 free throws (.864) while Augustana struggled at .526 (10-19).
Senior
Mikayla Fallon (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) led the Vikings in scoring with 16 points and she was also tops in rebounding with seven. She added an assist and a steal in 29 minutes of action. Reiley scored 15 points and sophomore
Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) had 14. Anderson topped the team in assists with four and steals with three and she also pulled down three rebounds.
Millikin got 23 points and 10 rebounds from Emily Schultz and 22 points and six rebounds out of Devin Curry.
Augustana is now 13-4 overall and 6-2 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin while Millikin went to 8-9 and 2-6. The Vikings will travel to Illinois Wesleyan on Wednesday, January 25 for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
