Vikings down Cornell, fall to UW-Whitewater at Elmhurst Invitational

Senior Jacqueline Kibir-Evans had nine kills and six blocks in Augustana's win over Cornell
Saturday at the Elmhurst Invitational.

ELMHURST, Ill. – Augustana's second day at the Elmhurst Invitational yielded another split, as the Vikings logged a four-set victory over Cornell before falling in three to Wisconsin-Whitewater. Coach Kelly Bethke's squad finished the first weekend of the season with a 2-2 record. Augustana will be back in action on Wednesday, September 7, hosting Coe in a 7:00 match at Carver Center.
 
AUGUSTANA 3, CORNELL 1 (25-18; 20-25; 25-15; 25-22)
 
Sophomore Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) picked up where she left off Friday night, posting 15 kills and a crisp .353 attack percentage in Augustana's four-set win over Cornell.
 
The Rams won the first two points of the match, but the Vikings responded by taking 15 of the next 21 and cruising to a 25-18 first-set win. In set two, Augustana battled back from a 13-9 deficit to draw even at 17-all, but Cornell answered with four straight points and went on to win 25-20.
 
The Rams started strong in game three, taking a 5-1 lead before Bethke's bunch won the next five points. A Maissie Musick (Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) kill put the Vikings ahead for good at 13-12 and her service ace accounted for set point in a 25-15 win. A kill by senior Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) gave Augustana a 17-16 lead it wouldn't relinquish in the final set. Cornell drew to within 22-21, but another Evans kill put the Vikings up by two and they went on to win 25-22.
 
Senior Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) complimented VanEarwage with 11 kills and Kibir-Evans added eight. Senior Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) and sophomore McKenzie Zambrano (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) had 25 and 18 assists, respectively and VanEarwage and Musick each delivered a pair of service aces.
 
With a match-high 14 digs, VanEarwage made her presence felt defensively as well. Junior Claire Martin (Mother McAuley HS, Orland Park, Ill.) chipped in with 11 digs and Kibir-Evans led the way in blocks with three solo and six assists.
 
Cornell fell to 0-3 on the young season.
 
UW-WHITEWATER 3, AUGUSTANA 0 (25-18; 25-18; 25-14)
 
The Warhawks evened their record at 2-2, cruising to a three-set win by scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-14.
 
Lauren Pfeifer and Alexandra Bialo paced the Whitewater attack with 11 kills each. Sydney Racky added nine. Setter Staci Hasler offered up 35 assists.
 
Only Morrissey, with seven, managed more than three kills for Augustana. Lindaman led the Vikings with 11 assists and VanEarwage with three service aces. Martin's 13 digs were a team high, followed VanEarwage with 11 and Lindaman with 10.
