Augustana earns first CCIW win at Carroll

WAUKESHA, Wis. – Augustana picked up its first CCIW win of the season Tuesday, defeating Carroll in straights sets at Van Male Field House. Coach Kelly Bethke's Vikings improved to 13-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while the host Pioneers dropped to 5-11 on the season and 0-2 in the league.
 
The visitors showed excellent balance in winning by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-18. Five Vikings recorded at least a half-dozen kills. Bethke's pair of setters split 37 assists nearly evenly and three players logged 12 or more digs.
 
Augustana took five straight points in the opening game, going from down 14-13 to up 18-14 and Carroll would get no closer than two points the rest of the way. Set point came on a Pioneer attack error.
 
After losing the first point of game two, the Vikings won eight straight, the last seven with sophomore Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) serving. Kills by Amy Kalkhoff (Clear Creek Amana HS, North Liberty, Iowa) accounted for three of the final four points in the run. Carroll bounced back to get within one point, but Augustana won eight of the last 11 for a 25-19 victory.
 
The third set played out much the same as the second, with the visitors jumping out in front 6-1. The Pioneers came back to take a 16-15 lead, but the Vikings responded with six straight points and were in control the rest of the way. Match point came on a Carroll attack error.
 
Seniors Kalkhoff and Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) put away a match-high nine kills each. Kalkhoff committed just two errors in 19 attempts for a team-high .368 attack percentage. Van Earwage chipped in with eight kills, junior Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) seven and senior Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) six.
 
Sophomore McKenzie Zambrano (Rock island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) dished out a match-best 19 assists, one more than senior Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa).
 
Junior libero Claire Martin's (Mother McAuley HS, Orland Park, Ill.) 20 digs were a match high as well. VanEarwage added 13 and Westermeyer a dozen.
 
On Tuesday, October 4, the Vikings will be back in action at Elmhurst. The Bluejays are currently 10-4 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW and ranked 18th in the nation. The match, at Faganel Hall is schedule for a 7:00 p.m. start.
