Vikings drop CCIW opener to Carthage 3-1 at Carver

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Despite an 8-1 start in game one and a rousing comeback in the third set the Augustana volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (23-25; 17-25; 27-25; 25-19) decision to Carthage in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action on Wednesday, September 21 in the Carver Center. The Vikings fell to 9-4 overall while the Lady Reds evened their record at 6-6 in the conference opener for both teams.
 
Augustana certainly got the start it was looking for as the Vikings jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the first set before Carthage battled back and eventually took game one 25-23. After dropping the second set 25-17 head coach Kelly Bethke's team was staring at a 24-20 deficit in game three and in danger of getting swept. Instead, behind the serving of senior Amy Kalkhoff (Clear Creek Amana HS, North Liberty, Iowa) the Vikings rallied for a 27-25 win. Carthage recovered, however, and took game four 25-19 to close out the match.
 
The Vikings got 10 kills each from sophomore Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and senior Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.). VanEarwage added a team high 16 digs and a block assist while Kibir-Evans had a block assist while hitting at a .409 clip with just one error in 22 attempts. Junior Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) had six kills and eight digs.
 
Senior Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) led the team in setting assists with 24 while contributing 12 digs and a kill. Sophomore McKenzie Zambrano (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) had 12 setting assists, four digs and a kill.
 
Senior Claire Martin (Mother McAuley HS, Orland Park, Ill.) and sophomore Sierra Rood (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) each had two service aces.
 
Carthage got 15 kills from Megan Behrendt and 13 from Stephanie Korbakes while Abigail McGowan was credited with 25 assists.
 
Augustana will be in action again on Friday, September 23 with matches against Anderson and Earlham in Jacksonville, Illinois before heading to Decatur, Illinois on Saturday, September 24 to play another neutral site match, this one against Rose-Hulman.
