Vikings win first CCIW championship since 1997; tie school record for wins; Ali MacDonald named CCIW Championship MVP, ties Augustana season record for doubles wins; Caitlyn Schaffer breaks school mark for singles and doubles wins in a season

A school record-tying 24 dual meet wins and the program's first CCIW championship since 1997 highlighted the 2015-16 season for Coach Jon Miedema's Augustana women's tennis team. The Vikings' 24-8 mark equaled last year's record win total and they advanced to the championship round in every flight at the conference tournament, where Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) earned MVP honors. In addition, freshman Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) set new school records for single-season wins in both singles (31) and doubles (30).

Augustana ripped through the fall schedule, winning an amazing 106 of 108 individual matches on its way to 12 straight dual meet victories. Of the Vikings' first 12 opponents, only Grinnell and Carthage managed to take a single match.

Miedema's squad also finished second of eight teams at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational and advanced MacDonald and partner Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) to the doubles semifinals at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

With each sporting a 6-0 CCIW mark, Augustana and Wheaton squared off on October 17 for the top spot in the conference standings. The Vikings took two of three doubles matches, but the hosts won five of six singles tilts to post a 6-3 win and hand Augustana its first dual meet setback of the season.

The sting of that loss didn't last too long, as the next weekend Miedema's bunch advanced a representative to the final round of every flight at the CCIW Championships, winning the team title for the first time since 1997. MacDonald won the conference title at fourth singles and she and Dana Goggin were league champs at first doubles, earning the senior tournament MVP honors. Other conference champions for the Vikings were Dana Goggin, who successfully defended her second singles title, sophomore Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.), who repeated as third singles champ and the freshman duo of Schaffer and Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.), who won at third doubles.

Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.), Schaffer and senior Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) finished second at first, fifth and sixth singles, respectively, with Goggin and Schaffer both taking their opponents to a third set. Lauren Goggin and Magee finished second at number two doubles as well.

The spring season featured some stiff competition which included NCAA Division I Loyola (Md.), Division II University of Mary, strong NAIA Davenport, as well as Division III powers UW-Whitewater, Gustavus Adolphus and Hope (twice). Still, the Vikings won 11 of their 17 spring duals heading into the CCIW's Automatic Qualifier on April 29 and 30.

Augustana—which had earned home court advantage by virtue of its CCIW Tournament championship—defeated North Central 5-0 to advance to the finals against Wheaton. With each team having won four matches, the contest came down to third singles, where Magee lost a hard-fought 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 decision to Emily Jones, giving the Thunder the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Miedema's entire regular singles lineup reached the 20-win plateau this year and each of his top three doubles teams won at least 22 matches. Schaffer compiled a sparkling 31-5 mark to set a new single-season win record at Augustana. Magee, whose record Schaffer took down, went 25-10 and now has 55 singles win in just two seasons. MacDonald went 24-7, Lauren Goggin 23-14, Dana Goggin 21-10 and Andonova 20-8. In doubles, MacDonald and Dana Goggin finished 26-9, Lauren Goggin and Magee were 23-8 and Schaffer and Lombardi 24-8. All three teams now rank in the top four all-time at Augustana in single-season wins.

MacDonald finished her career sixth in Vikings' history with 70 singles wins and second in doubles victories with 81. Her 151 total wins are third most in school history behind only Kim Sawyer (178 from 2010-14) and Sarah Ainsworth (157 from 1993-98). With a season left to play, the Goggins are quickly moving up the school's career charts as well. Lauren is fifth all-time with 139 total wins and ranks eighth with 67 career singles victories. Dana is two behind in both categories, ranking seventh all-time in total wins. The two are tied for fifth in career doubles victories with 72 each.

The Vikings finished the season ranked 14th in the Central Region by the ITA. Individually, Lauren Goggin earned a number 17 singles ranking in the region, while MacDonald and Dana Goggin were the 10th-ranked doubles team.
