Sophomores Eric Pohl and Samuel Totten won both their doubles matches at number one
in the final two matches of the CCIW Tournament.
WHEATON, Ill. – Augustana finished the 2016 men's tennis season with a 5-4 victory over Elmhurst on Saturday, May 7 to clinch third place in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Tournament, which was held on May 5-7 in Wheaton, Illinois. The Vikings dropped a 5-1 decision to host Wheaton on Friday, May 6 in the semi-finals before bouncing back a day later to beat the Bluejays for the second time this season.
Augustana finished the season with a 15-11 overall record and the Vikings were ranked 19
th in the latest NCAA Division III Central Region poll.
05/07/16 – AUGUSTANA 5, ELMHURST 4 (third place CCIW)
A clean sweep of the doubles matches keyed the Vikings in their 5-4 win over Elmhurst for third place in the CCIW Tournament on Saturday, May 7. Sophomores
Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and
Samuel Totten (Normal University HS, Normal, Ill.) beat Chris Harrison and Quinn Jennings 8-1 at number one. Junior
Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and freshman
Jack Morkin (Normal University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) took an 8-2 win over Alex Abbuhl and Ricardo Franco at number two. The number three team of seniors
Austin Schoeck (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and
Harald Olsson (Hersby Gymnasium, Stockholm, Sweden) defeated Kyle Endicott and Justin Delawder 8-4 at doubles.
With the 3-0 lead the Vikings got a win from senior
Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) at number three singles and Morkin at number five to clinch the match. Lenz beat Abbuhl 6-4; 6-4 and Morkin took care of Franco 6-3; 6-4.
Totten lost a marathon decision to Harrison at number one 6-0; 4-6; 11-13 and freshman
Carl Christensen (Hoellviken, Sweden) had a tough 6-3; 3-6; 9-11 match go against him at number four. Pohl lost 0-6; 1-6 to Jennings at number two.
05/06/16 – WHEATON 5, AUGUSTANA 1 (CCIW semi-final)
The Vikings got a solid win from Totten and Pohl at number one doubles by a score of 8-4 over Justin Ancona and Matt Steiner for their only point of the match. Morkin and Woolf fell 9-7 at number two to Lincoln Metz and Dane Paulsen and Schoeck and Olsson dropped an 8-6 decision to Josh Cheng and Karl Wenzel at number three.
Pohl fell to Paulsen 6-0; 6-1 at number two and Lenz lost 7-5; 6-0 to Steiner at number three. Christensen lost 6-3; 6-1 to Metz at number four.
The matches at number one (Totten), five (Morkin) and six (Schoeck) singles went unfinished.
