ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Despite taking a 2-1 lead after doubles play, Augustana fell to Carthage 7-2 in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin opener for the Vikings on Saturday, April 9 at the Lower Campus Courts. It was a battle between regionally ranked opponents as the Vikings came into the match ranked 18
th in the Central Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) while the Red Men checked in at 16
th.
Augustana's sophomore duo of
Samuel Totten (Normal University HS, Normal, Ill.) and
Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) at number one doubles picked up an 8-6 win over Pawel Jaworski and Chris Conley. The number three team of seniors
Harald Olsson (Hersby Gymnasium, Stockholm, Sweden) and
Austin Schoeck (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) defeated Lukasz Jaworski and Fordy Leipold 8-4.
The Vikings number two team of junior
Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) and freshman
Jack Morkin (Normal University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) fell to Alex Boomgarden and Ryan Jump 8-0.
Totten and senior
Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) dropped three-set matches in singles play. Totten lost to Boomgarden 3-6; 6-3; 3-6 at number one and Lenz fell 7-6; 0-6; 1-6 at number three.
Pohl was defeated 4-6; 0-6 by Jump at number two and freshman
Carl Christensen (Hoellviken, Sweden) dropped a 1-6; 2-6 decision to Conley at number four. Morkin went down 4-6; 2-6 to Lukasz Jaworski at number five and Woolf lost 3-6; 3-6 to Ferruzzi at number six.
Augustana is now 7-8 overall and 0-1 in the CCIW while Carthage moved to 15-6 and 3-0. The Vikings will host Millikin on Wednesday, April 13 at 4:00 p.m. on the Lower Campus Courts.
