Women's tennis gets win over nationally ranked Kalamazoo to close out Midwest Invitational

Senior Aileen MacDonald won twice in singles on Saturday,
April 2 at the Midwest Invitational. Included in her two wins was
a 6-3; 6-1 victory at number four singles in Augustana's 5-4 
triumph over 37th ranked Kalamazoo.

MADISON, Wis. – Facing a pair of nationally ranked opponents, the Augustana women's tennis team came up with a split on Saturday, April 2 in Madison, Wisconsin. Head coach Jon Miedema's charges lost 5-2 to 27th ranked Hope before defeating 37th ranked Kalamazoo 5-4. Augustana is currently 19-6 on the season and will host Cornell at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, April 10 in its next match.
 
#27 HOPE 5, AUGUSTANA 2
 
Hope, ranked 27th in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) NCAA Division III national poll, defeated Augustana 5-2 on Saturday, April 2 in the Midwest Invitational. The Flying Dutch jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles and then won three of four in singles to end the match. The singles matches at numbers five and six were not finished because the match had already been decided.
 
Junior Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomore Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) picked up a hard-fought 9-8 win over Anna Garcia and Taylor Labarge at number two doubles.
 
Senior Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) and junior Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) lost to Nancy Benda and Marie Holaway 8-5 at number one doubles. At number three doubles the freshmen team of Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) and Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) lost 9-7 to Natalie Rahrig and Catherine Wingrove.
 
MacDonald picked up the lone win for the Vikings in singles play, defeating Kate Mader 6-4; 7-6 at number four. Benda defeated Lauren Goggin 6-3; 6-3 at number one and Garcia beat Dana Goggin 7-5; 4-6; 10-4 in a long match at number two. Magee fell 6-4; 6-2 to Holaway at number three.
 
Schaffer at number five and junior Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) at number six did not get to finish their respective matches.
 
AUGUSTANA 5, #37 KALAMAZOO 4
 
The Vikings, ranked 15th in the ITA Central Region, took a 5-4 decision over Kalamazoo, ranked 37th in the nation, in the final match of the Midwest Regional. Augustana moved to 19-6 with the victory, which came on the strength of the Vikings' depth. Augustana won at two and three doubles and at four through six in singles.
 
In doubles play, Miedema's team got wins from junior Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) at number two and freshmen Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) and Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) at number three.
 
Lauren Goggin and Magee beat Maria Franco and Sonal Bahl 8-5 at number two and Lombardi and Schaffer took down Katie Clark and Alexandria Oswalt 8-2 at number three.
 
The Vikings number one team of Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and senior Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) lost to Sabrina Dass and Sarah Woods 8-4.
 
MacDonald beat Eloise Germic 6-3; 6-1 at number four and Schaffer defeated Bahl 7-5; 6-1 at number five. Junior Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) handled Clark 6-4; 6-0 at number six.
 
Lauren Goggin lost 6-2; 6-0 to Woods at number one and Dana Goggin fell 6-2; 6-3 to Dass at number two. Magee dropped a 6-4; 6-2 decision to Franco at number three.
