WHEATON, Ill. – Playing without number one player Samuel Totten (Normal University HS, Normal, Ill.), Augustana dropped a 6-3 College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin men's tennis decision at Wheaton on Saturday, April 23. The Vikings, now 11-10 overall and 2-2 in the CCIW, have been without the services of Totten, who is nursing a bad back, for the last week.

Senior Austin Schoeck (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) had a part in two of the three points earned for Augustana on the day. He started the match in doubles and he teamed with Nicholas Prabhakar (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) for an 8-5 win over Josh Cheng and Brent Westergren at number three doubles. In singles action Schoeck beat Cheng 6-4; 6-4 at number five.

The other point for the Vikings came at number four singles where freshman Jack Morkin (Normal Community HS, Bloomington, Ill.) defeated Karl Wenzel 6-4; 7-5.

Augustana fell behind 2-1 after doubles. The number one team of sophomore Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and freshman Carl Christensen (Hoellviken, Sweden) lost 8-5 to Matt Steiner and Justin Ancona. At number two doubles Morkin and senior Harald Olsson (Hersby Gymnasium, Stockholm, Sweden) dropped a tough 9-7 decision to Lincoln Metz and Dane Paulsen.

Pohl slid into the number one singles position left vacant by Totten's injury and he fell 6-4; 6-4 to Paulsen. Senior Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) lost 6-3; 6-2 to Steiner at number two and Christensen lost a three-setter to Metz at number three. Christensen won the first set 6-1 but then lost 6-2; 6-1. At number six singles junior Jonathon Elsey (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) lost 6-1; 6-3 to Andrew Torok.

Augustana will stay in the Chicago suburbs and play a CCIW contest against Elmhurst on Sunday, April 24. Wheaton moved to 10-7 overall and 3-1 in league play with the win.
