Vikings move two over .500 with 8-1 win over St. Ambrose

Junior Jonathon Elsey got a chance at number six singles
on Tuesday against St. Ambrose and responded with a 
6-0; 6-0 win over Tony Houston as the Vikings defeated the 
Fighting Bees for the 17th straight time.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana pushed its overall record to 11-9 on the season with a convincing 8-1 victory over St. Ambrose in non-conference men's tennis action on Tuesday, April 19 at the Lower Campus Courts. The Vikings have won three in a row and four of the last five following a 7-2 loss to Carthage on April 9.
 
The win over St. Ambrose is the 17th straight in the series, dating back to a 4-3 loss to the Fighting Bees during the 2004-05 season.
 
Although the Vikings swept the doubles to take a 3-0 lead, two of the three matches were close. At number one sophomore Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) and freshman Carl Christensen (Hoellviken, Sweden) beat Bart Van Rooijen and Dave Smith 8-6. The number two team of freshman Jack Morkin (Normal University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and junior Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) beat Mitchell Schumacher and Kevin Beckett 9-7. It was a little easier at number three where seniors Austin Schoeck (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and Harald Olsson (Hersby Gymnasium, Stockholm, Sweden) beat Jake Anderson and Dylan Fairbairn 8-1.
 
Senior Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) beat Schumacher 6-0; 6-0 at number two singles and Christensen took care of Smith 6-1; 6-1 at number three. Morkin defeated Anderson 6-0; 6-0 at number four while Schoeck beat Colin Stiefer 6-0; 6-0 at number five. Junior Jonathon Elsey (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) stepped in at number six singles and he defeated Tony Houston 6-0; 6-0.
 
Augustana will play a key College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin match at Wheaton on Saturday, April 23 before facing Elmhurst in Elmhurst on Sunday, April 24.
