Women's tennis splits with Hope and Aquinas

Freshman Caitlyn Schaffer won four matches on Saturday in 
Michigan as the Vikings lost to Hope and defeated Aquinas.

Just a few days after moving up to 13th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) Central Region rankings the Augustana women's tennis team traveled to Michigan for a pair of matches. The Vikings fell to Hope, ranked 34th nationally in NCAA Division III and eighth in the Central Region by a score of 7-2 on Saturday, April 16 in Holland, Michigan. Later that same day head coach Jon Miedema's team traveled over to Grand Rapids and was able to defeat Aquinas by a score of 7-2.
 
Augustana is currently 21-7 overall and will be in action again on Sunday, April 24 with dual matches at home against St. Norbert (9:00 a.m.) and Luther (3:00 p.m.).
 
HOPE 7, AUGUSTANA 2
 
In a battle between regionally ranked opponents, Hope defeated Augustana by a score of 7-2 in Holland, Michigan. It was the second victory for the Flying Dutch over the Vikings in the last two weeks. Hope took a 5-2 decision on April 2 in Madison, Wisconsin during the Midwest Invitational.
 
Freshman Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) had a part in both points scored by Augustana in the match against the number eight ranked team in the Central Region. The Vikings came in wearing the number 13 ranking.
 
Schaeffer defeated Natalie Rahrig at number five singles by a score of 6-4; 6-2. She teamed with fellow freshman Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) at number three doubles for an 8-3 win over Amanda Susnak and Kate Mader.
 
Augustana's number one doubles team of junior Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and senior Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) lost to Marie Holaway and Nancy Benda 8-3. The Vikings' number two team of junior Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomore Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) dropped an 8-3 decision to Taylor LaBarge and Anna Garcia.
 
Lauren Goggin fell to Benda at number one singles 6-0; 6-2 and Dana Goggin dropped a three-setter at number two to Garcia 6-4; 4-6; 10-6. Magee also took her match to three sets at number three singles before losing 6-4; 5-7; 13-11. MacDonald lost to Mader 6-2; 6-1 and junior Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) lost 6-1; 6-1 to LaBarge at number six.
 
AUGUSTANA 7, AQUINAS 2
 
After falling to Hope in Holland, Michigan the Vikings hustled over to Grand Rapids for an afternoon match with Aquinas.  Augustana prevailed by a score of 7-2 to run its season's record to 21-7 overall.
 
Once again, Schaffer had a hand in two points as she won at both number five singles and number three doubles. She defeated Brittany Mayer 6-2; 6-1 in singles and teamed with Lombardi to beat Kali Green and Mayer 8-4 in doubles.
 
Lauren Goggin and Magee beat Marjeanna Bothma and Anna Musiyenko 8-4 at number two doubles and Magee defeated Bothma 6-1; 6-3 at number three singles.
 
Dana Goggin picked up a 6-2; 6-2 win over Martina Devetak at number two singles and Andonova beat Kasey Jacobs 6-3; 6-1 at number six singles. MacDonald won 6-2; 6-2 over Musiyenko at number four singles.
 
The Vikings fell at number one doubles when Dana Goggin and MacDonald lost 8-4 to Devetak and Lea Jansen. The other Aquinas point came at number one singles where Jansen beat Lauren Goggin 6-0; 6-2.
