Freshman Jared Ekberg broke two individual school records and swam on a pair of record-setting
relays, all on the same day at the CCIW Championships.

Viking men finish 3-1 in dual meets and fourth at CCIW Championships; Ekberg and Disteldorf each break two individual school records; four relay marks fall as well

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Junior Ian Disteldorf (Brother Rice HS, Oak Forest, Ill.) and freshman Jared Ekberg (Rockford Christian HS, Rockford, Ill.) each took down a pair of individual school records this year and four relay marks fell as well during Augustana's 2015-16 men's swimming season. Coach Dan Lloyd's Vikings won three of four dual meets and finished fourth at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships. Ekberg also brought home a conference title in the 200 individual medley.

Augustana opened the season at home on Halloween, dominating Knox (158-38) and Loras (153-60) by winning 10 of 12 events. Ekberg, senior Adam Bernardi (Boylan HS, Belvidere, Ill.) and freshman Bryan Haage (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) each won two individual events.

The Vikings continued their dominance with a 144.5-39.5 victory at Monmouth on November 20. Ekberg won the 200 IM and 500 freestyle and led off the winning 200 freestyle relay.

Competing at its first invitational event on November 21, Augustana finished third of seven teams at Illinois Wesleyan. Ekberg was a winner in the 100 backstroke.

The Vikings' lone dual meet loss came on January 9 at Carthage by a score of 139-122. Sommers won the 100 and 200 butterflies and Disteldorf won the 100 and 200 breaststrokes to earn CCIW Swimmer of the Week honors.

Augustana took fourth place among eight teams at the Grinnell Invitational on January 22-23. Ekberg won the 100 backstroke and 100 IM and Jacob Speechley (Lockport HS, Lockport, Ill.) claimed the 100 freestyle on Friday. On Saturday, Ekberg and Disteldorf, along with sophomores Chris Wilson (Bradford-on-Tone, United Kingdom) and Speechley comprised the winning 200 medley relay. Ekberg's effort garnered CCIW Swimmer of the Week recognition.

The Vikings warmed up for the conference meet by winning the Wheaton Quad on January 30. Augustana edged out the hosts for the title by a single point (152-151). Illinois Tech and North Central also competed. Ekberg (100 backstroke), Disteldorf (100 breaststroke) and senior Felipe Hernandez (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) (200 backstroke) were individual winners and the 200 freestyle relay of Disteldorf, Ekberg, Haage and Speechley was also victorious.

All eight of this year's school records were set at the CCIW Championships in Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin on February 11-13.

Ekberg started off with a bang on Thursday, shattering Aaron Holt's school record by nearly four seconds (1:51.67) in winning the 200 IM. He also swam a :49.99 100 backstroke split in the 4x100 medley relay,  besting Holt's previous mark of :50.96. He, Disteldorf, senior David Sommers (Westlake HS, Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Speechley broke the 400 medley relay record with a third-place 3:24.87. In addition, Disteldorf, Ekberg, Haage and Speechley swam a school-record 1:24.39 in the 200 freestyle relay, finishing fourth.

On Friday, Disteldorf broke Matt Roche's school record in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a third-place :57.57. He, along with Ekberg, Wilson and Speechley also set a new Augustana standard in the 200 medley relay with a fourth-place 1:33.59.

On Saturday, the oldest school record on the books fell. Tom Hancock's 1986 200 breaststroke mark (2:08.21) was bettered by Distledorf's preliminary time of 2:08.14. The Viking 400 freestyle relay also set a school record. Speechley, sophomore Miguel Rodgriguez (Boylan HS, Rockford, Ill.), Haage and Ekberg finished fourth in a time 3:06.27.

Augustana finished fourth in the team standings with 399 points. Associate member Rose-Hulman won its second straight CCIW title with 883 points, followed by Carthage (866), Wheaton (740), Augustana, Illinois Wesleyan (324), North Central (100) and Millikin (93).
