Viking men fall to D1 Loyola; down Capital

Sophomore Sam Totten won all four of his matches at first singles and doubles Wednesday as
Augustana split with Division I Loyola (6-1 loss) and Capital (8-1 win)

ORLANDO, Fla.  –Augustana men's tennis split a pair of dual meets Wednesday on the team's spring trip to Florida. The Vikings took on NCAA Division I Loyola (Md.), falling 6-1 in Tampa, before stepping back into the Division III ranks and defeating Capital by a score of 8-1 in Orlando. Coach John Miedema's squad, now 6-4 in dual-meet competition, is back in action on March 13, taking on Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Madison, Wisconsin before traveling to Wisconsin-Whitewater.
 
LOYOLA (Md.) 6, AUGUSTANA 1
 
Sophomore Samuel Totten (University HS, Normal, Ill.) was a double winner against the Greyhounds. He and classmate Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) won their match at first doubles 8-4 over Blest Jones and Brett Shriver. Totten also won at number one singles, scoring a 4-6, 6-4, 10-4 victory over Jordan Kuchta.
 
Loyola earned Division I scoring's single point for doubles play with wins at number two and three. Greyhounds Connor Pietrak and Alex Castro defeated freshmen Carl Christensen (Hoelllviken, Sweden) and Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) 8-5 at second doubles and Kuchta and C.J. Cash were 8-1 winners at number three over senior Austin Schoeck (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and junior Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.).
 
In singles, Pohl fell to Tyler Blessing 6-4, 6-2 at number two. Senior Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) dropped a 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 decision to Reid Burch at number three and Christensen lost love and two to Pietrak at number four. Castro downed Morkin 6-3, 6-1 at fifth singles and Schoeck fell to Jones 6-4, 6-2 at number six.
 
AUGUSTANA 8, CAPITAL 1
 
Augustana swept the doubles competition and won at the first five singles spots against the Crusaders.
 
Totten and Pohl were 8-3 winners over Luke Buchanan and Dale Booher at first doubles. Morkin and Christensen scored an 8-2 win over John Roberts and Stefn Sandberg at number two and Woolf and Schoeck took down C.J. Martin and Gian Carlo DiMichaelangelo 8-0 at number three.
 
Totten was a one and one winner over Buchanan at first singles. Pohl took care of Booher one and love at number two and Lenz was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Gian Carlo DiMichaelangelo at number three.
 
Singles four through six all went to third sets, with the Vikings coming from behind to win at four and five. Morkin downed Martin 5-7, 6-2, 10-7 at number four and junior Jonathon Elsey (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) won 2-6, 7-6, 12-10 over Santino DiMichaelangelo at number five. At sixth singles, junior Nicholas Prabhakar (Rockford Lutheran HS, Belvidere, Ill.) dropped a 6-1, 5-7, 10-6 decision to Roberts.
