Junior Lauren Goggin won at number one singles and number two doubles as the
Vikings defeated Coe, ranked 13th regionally, 9-0 on Thursday, March 25 in Cedar
Rapids, Iowa. It was Augustana's first win over the Kohawks since 2004.CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – For the second straight outing the Augustana women's tennis team posted a 9-0 whitewash of a regionally ranked opponent. This time it was Coe, ranked 13
th in the Central Region, which fell to the Vikings on Thursday, March 24 at the Clark Racquet Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Augustana is currently ranked 15
th in the Central Region.
Last Sunday head coach
Jon Miedema's team defeated number 20 Lake Forest, also by a score of 9-0 and also on the road. With the win Augustana moves to 18-4 overall and it was the first win over the Kohawks since a 5-4 decision in 2004. The victory snapped a six match losing streak to Coe.
The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead in doubles but it certainly wasn't easy as both number one and number two were decided by narrow 9-8 decisions.
Junior
Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and senior
Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) knocked off Haley Resnick and Laura Birky 9-8 at number one. Goggin and MacDonald, ranked 25
th in the nation in doubles, moved their record to 22-4 on the season.
The number two team of junior
Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and sophomore
Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) followed suit with a 9-8 win against Tamara Washington and Dinnah Watson.
Lauren Goggin and Magee are now 17-5 this season.
At number three it was the freshman duo of
Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) and
Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) scoring an 8-3 win over Sarah Lasecki and Kaitlin Fosler. Schaffer and Lombardi are now 19-6 on the year.
All six of the singles matches were won in straight sets by Augustana.
Lauren Goggin went to 19-8 on the year with a 6-1; 6-2 win over Resnick at number one and twin sister
Dana Goggin upped her mark to 17-6 with a 6-2; 6-1 victory over Amy Sebastian at number two.
Magee, who is closing in on 100 combined career victories, beat Birky 6-2; 6-1 at number three. Magee is 22-5 on the season and 97-33 in her career with a 52-17 record in singles and a 45-16 mark in doubles.
MacDonald beat Washington 7-5; 6-2 at number four to move to 17-5 on the year and Schaffer is now 22-5 at beating Lasecki 7-5; 6-2. Junior
Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.) beat Watson 6-2; 6-2 at number six and is 15-5 this year.
Augustana will be in competition again on April 1-2 at the Midwest Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin.
