Vikings split in men's tennis on Sunday

Connor Woolf picked up a win at number six singles against Wisconsin-Oshkosh on 
Sunday, March 13 in Madison, Wisconsin.

MADISON, Wis. & JANESVILLE, Wis. – Augustana played a pair of non-conference men's tennis matches on Sunday, March 13 in two separate locations with two different results. The Vikings started the day with a match against Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 9:00 a.m. in Madison, Wisconsin. That resulted in a 9-0 Augustana victory.
 
After wrapping things up in Madison, head coach Jon Miedema hustled his team over to Janesville, Wisconsin for an afternoon match with Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Warhawks are currently ranked 16th nationally in NCAA Division III and sixth in the Central Region, defeated Augustana, which is ranked 20th in the Central Region, by a score of 9-0.
 
With the split on the day the Vikings move to 7-5 on the season with the next competition set for March 19 at Lake Forest at 4:00 p.m.
 
AUGUSTANA 9, WISCONSIN-OSHKOSH 0
 
The Vikings rolled past Wisconsin-Oshkosh by a score of 9-0 in the first action of a busy Sunday on March 13 in Madison, Wisconsin. A sweep in doubles set Augustana up with a 3-0 lead heading into singles and Miedema's crew won all six singles matches.
 
Sophomores Samuel Totten (Normal University HS, Normal, Ill.) and Eric Pohl (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.) picked up an 8-3 win at number one doubles over Adam Hawley and Adam Martin. Freshmen Jack Morkin (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and Carl Christensen (Hoelvikin, Sweden) defeated Vincent Gorski and Ryan Kuzmanovic 8-2. The number three team of seniors Harald Olsson (Hersby Gymnasium, Stockholm, Sweden) and Austin Schoeck (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) beat Logan Zastrow and Jordan Anderson 8-2.
 
When the scene shifted to singles the Vikings stayed hot. Totten beat Gorski 6-0; 6-1 at number one while senior Patrick Lenz (Villanova Prep, Ojai, Calif.) defeated Kuzmanovic 6-0; 6-1 at number two. Christensen beat Hawley 2-6; 6-1; 6-0 at number three and Morkin took care of Martin 6-3; 6-3 at number four. Schoeck won 6-2; 6-3 against Zastrow at number five and senior Connor Woolf (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) beat David Leffler 6-4; 6-0 at number six.
 
WISCONSIN-WHITEWATER 9, AUGUSTANA 0
 
Augustana jumped in the team van after beating Wisconsin-Oshkosh in Madison and traveled to Janesville to take on the 16th ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks. The Vikings didn't have an answer, losing 9-0 to fall to 7-5 on the season while UW-Whitewater moved to 10-4.
 
Miedema had to change things around in doubles because Morkin became ill before the match. Totten and Pohl stayed at number one and fell 3-8 to Scott Butler and Rajshekhar Raman. The number two team was Christensen and Woolf and the Warhawk duo of Michael Schnarr and Grant Thompson came away with an 8-4 victory. Schoeck and Olsson teamed at number three doubles and fell 2-8 to Rory Calabria and Jimmy Engelhart.
 
Totten fell 2-6; 1-6 to Michael Treis at number one singles. Pohl lost 4-6; 6-3; 7-10 at number two to Grant Thompson. Lenz was in the number three slot and he fell 5-7; 2-6 to Zane Navratil. Christensen lost 6-7; 0-6 to Matt Bisbee at number four and Schoeck was defeated 2-6; 1-6 by Schnarr at number five. Olsson fell to Englehart 2-6; 0-6 at number five.
