Dubuque at the Pat Deacon Classic in Lexington, Kentucky.
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Emily Brinker's short jumper with 5.1 seconds left provided the margin of victory Friday, as Dubuque defeated Augustana 78-76 in the consolation game of Transylvania University's Pat Deacon Classic. The Vikings fell to 10-2 on the season, while the Spartans improved to 5-7.
Izzy Anderson's
(Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) conventional three-point play with 33 seconds to play drew Augustana even at 76-all, the 12th tie of the contest. After a Dubuque timeout, the Spartans put the ball in Brinker's hands. She drove right and lofted an eight-foot jumper over 6' 5"
Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa). The ball hit the back of the rim and dropped in with 5.1 seconds on the game clock and just two seconds on the shot clock.
After full and 30-second timeouts by Augustana,
Mikayla Fallon (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) got off a runner in the lane that rimmed out as time expired.
Dubuque led 20-18 after the first quarter and extended its advantage to eight (35-27) midway through the second. A pair of
Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) three-pointers and four Anderson free throws fueled a 10-2 Viking run that forged a 37-all tie. A jumper from the top of the key by freshman
Alexis Jones (Epic Academy, Chicago, Ill.) sent Coach
Mark Beinborn's squad to halftime with a 41-39 lead.
Victoria Allen's
(Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) three-pointer with 4:06 to play in the third quarter gave Augustana its biggest lead of the period at 54-48 and a trey by Reiley in the final minute put the Vikings ahead 62-57 entering the fourth quarter.
The advantage reached 68-59 on a Jones bucket with 5:39 to play, but Dubuque answered with a 9-0 run, capped by a Cece Pope three-point play that knotted the score at 68 with four minutes left. The rest of the game saw three more ties and five lead changes. Morgan Boer's basket with 45 seconds left gave the Spartans a 76-73 lead, the largest by either team in the final four and a half minutes.
Augustana's 76 points and .366 (26-71) field goal percentage were its lowest marks of the season. The Vikings converted just 10 of 34 (.294) field goal attempts in the second half. Despite Reiley's 5-of-9 performance from beyond the arc, Augustana was just eight of 28 (.286) as a team. Dubuque hit 30 of 61 (.492) from the floor and won the battle of the boards 44-36 to help offset a 27-19 disadvantage in turnovers.
Individually, Reiley led three Vikings in double figures with 17 points. Anderson went nine of nine at the free throw line and added 13 and Kallenberger just missed her second straight double-double, with 12 points and nine rebounds. Senior
Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) scored nine points and shared game highs in assists (five) and steals (two). Brinker's 18 points and eight rebounds led Dubuque.
Currently atop the CCIW standings with a 3-0 mark, Augustana jumps back into conference play on Wednesday, January 4. The Vikings host 24th-ranked Wheaton—8-2 overall and 2-0 and a half-game back in the league standings—at Carver Center with tipoff scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
