ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Sophomore Izzy Anderson (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) scored seven points in the final 36 seconds Tuesday as Augustana held off a furious rally by 16th-ranked Wisconsin-Whitewater, winning 86-78 at Carver Center. Coach Mark Beinborn's Vikings improved to 10-0 on the year, while the visiting Warhawks suffered their first loss in nine outings this season.

The hosts were in control for three and a half quarters. Jen VanWatermeulen's (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) second straight three-pointer gave Augustana a 74-59 lead—matching its largest of the night—with 4:43 to play. However, Whitewater responded with a 15-0 run, finished off by consecutive conventional three-point plays by Becky Raeder and Reilly Stewart, to tie it at 74-all with 1:12 left.

Senior Mikayla Fallon (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) put the Vikings back on top 77-74 with an and-one of her own with just under a minute to play and Augustana would lead the rest of the way. After Warhawk Malia Smith cut the deficit to one with a long two-pointer, Anderson rebounded her own miss and converted it into another old-fashioned three-point play for an 80-76 Viking lead. Anderson drained four more free throws in the final 25 seconds and senior Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) a pair to ice the victory.

Augustana never trailed in the contest. Its biggest lead in quarter one was 14-6 following a Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) put back at the 4:43 mark. Whitewater went to the offensive glass as well, getting six second-chance points in a 10-2 run that tied the score at 16-all. The Vikings eventually led 22-21 after one period.

A 13-1 run over four minutes in the second quarter pushed the Augustana advantage to its biggest of the half at 45-31 with 1:51 remaining. The Vikings ultimately settled for a 47-37 lead at the break.

The hosts maintained a comfortable lead through the third quarter as well.  UWW got as close as seven (56-49) on a Smith layup with 4:14 left in the period, but a Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) free throw and layups by Anderson and Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) pushed the margin back to a dozen. A pair of Reiley free throws kept it there (63-51) after three quarters.

The margin dipped below double digits just once in the fourth quarter prior to Whitewater's 15-0 spurt to tie it.

Reiley led four Vikings in double figures with 14. Mayer and Fallon added a dozen each and Anderson 11. Kallenberger had game highs of 10 rebounds and two blocks and junior Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) dished out a game-high four assists. Smith scored a game-high 26 for the Warhawks.

For the game, Augustana shot 27 of 65 (.415) from the field, eight of 21 (.381) from three-point range and 24 of 26 (.923) from the free throw line. Whitewater shot .345 (29-84) from the floor, .231 (3-13) from beyond the arc and .739 (17-23) at the foul line. Despite surrendering 21 offensive rebounds, the Vikings finished with a 52-46 overall edge on the boards. They committed 19 turnovers to 12 for the visitors.

Beinborn's club will try and extend its winning streak to 11 games—which would match the third-longest in program history—when it takes on Berea at Transylvania's Pat Deacon Classic on December 29. Tipoff in Lexington, Kentucky is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. EST. Augustana will be back in action at the tournament on December 30, with time and opponent yet to be determined.
