Vikings stay unbeaten with 83-68 win at home over Carthage

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana used a 21-8 run in the third quarter to break open what had been a close game in an 83-68 win over Carthage on Saturday, December 10 in the Carver Center. The College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin contest was tied 42-42 at halftime and the Vikings trailed 46-44 with 8:21 left in the third quarter.
 
Sophomore Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) tied the game at 46-46 with a basket at 7:58. It was the ninth and last tie of the night as Augustana got three point field goals from senior Mikayla Fallon (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) and junior Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Ill.) in the next 30 seconds to break on top 52-46.
 
The Lady Reds did cut the margin to two points (52-50) at 6:32 on a basket by Monica Masini but senior Jennifer VanWatermeulen (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) hit a basket and then sophomores Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) and Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) nailed back-to-back three point baskets to make it 60-50 with 3:54 left in the third.
 
The third quarter ended with Kramer beating the buzzer on a bucket off an offensive rebound to make it 65-54 with just one period left to play.
 
Fallon started the fourth with a three point basket and sophomore Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) scored to push the margin to 16 points (70-54) with 8:29 left. The lead never got less than 13 points the rest of the way and reached 19 points (81-62) with 2:54 left on a basket by senior Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa).
 
Augustana shot extremely well from three point range, making nine of 20 (.450) and the Vikings held Carthage to just .136 (3-22) from three point range.
 
Fallon led Augustana in scoring with 16 points while Roberts hit for 13 and senior Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) and Anderson each scored 12 points. Kallenberger pulled down 12 rebounds and had three assists, two blocked shots and two steals.
 
Anderson dished off five assists and had four steals while hauling in seven rebounds and Mayer had four assists, one steal and two rebounds. Augustana forced Carthage into 23 turnovers.
 
Morgan Vukovich led Carthage in scoring with 20 points and 13 rebounds.
 
Augustana moved to 8-0 on the season and 3-0 in the CCIW while Carthage fell to 5-4 and 2-1. The Vikings will be in action again on Saturday, December 17 at Central Iowa in Pella, Iowa with a 2:00 p.m. tip-off.
