ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Sophomores
Izzy Anderson (Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) and
Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) tallied career highs of 23 and 20 points, respectively, Tuesday as Augustana defeated Coe 103-94 in overtime at Carver Center. The Vikings hit the century mark for the third time this year and improved to 5-0 for the first time in program history. The Kohawks dropped to 1-2 on the year.
An Anderson bucket with 2:20 left in regulation gave the hosts an 87-81 lead, but Coe got a pair of Aleena Hobbs free throw and a Jordan Holmes three-pointer to trim the deficit to 87-86 at the one minute mark. The Kohawks got a defensive stop and after a timeout, Jenna Lehman missed a jumper. However, Destiny Smith grabbed the offensive rebound to give her team another opportunity. After another timeout, Holmes was fouled by
Mikayla Fallon (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) with 10 seconds left. She converted her first free throw, but missed the second and
Olivia Mayer's
(Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) jumper just before the buzzer was off the mark.
In overtime, Augustana took the lead on a Fallon free throw with 4:37 to play and never trailed. The lead was still one (93-92) with three minutes remaining, but Fallon hit a three from the left corner and a layup and the margin was never less than six the rest of the way. Reiley hit four straight free throws in the final minute to help seal the win.
The Vikings took their first lead (11-9) on a
Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) three-pointer midway through the first quarter and wouldn't trail again until midway through the fourth. They led 21-17 after the first period and after the Kohawks tied it four times in the second quarter, Augustana eventually took a 46-41 advantage to the locker room.
Senior
Jen VanWatermeulen (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) hit two free throws with 1:47 left in the third quarter to extend the lead to 62-53, the largest of the game. However, Coe got a Mickey Hansche three-pointer, a Hobbs layup and a Lehman free throw to trim the deficit to 62-59 after three.
The Kohawks eventually forged a 74-70 lead midway through the fourth quarter, but a
Sadie Roberts (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) bucket and back-to-back three-pointers by Allen put the Vikings back on top and they wouldn't trail again.
The win was the first for Augustana over Coe since 1987-88, snapping a string of nine straight losses to the Kohawks.
In addition to her 23 points, Anderson grabbed three rebounds, dished out four assists and snared a game-high three steals. She hit 10 of 15 from the field, including two of three from three-point range. Joining her and Reiley in double figures were Allen and senior
Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) with a dozen each and Roberts with 11. Kallenberger had a team-high seven rebounds and Mayer a game-high six assists. Lehman led Coe with 31 points and 12 rebounds.
The Vikings shot .482 (40-83) from the floor and .563 (9-16) from beyond the arc, both season highs. They hit 14 of 21 (.667) from the foul line. Coe hit 37 of 74 (.500) field goal attempts, including nine of 22 (.409) from three-point range and 11 of 17 (.647) from the free throw line. Augustana had a 46-43 edge on the glass and committed just 10 turnovers to 19 for the visitors.
