ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana forced 30 Monmouth turnovers Saturday on its way to an 83-51 win over the Scots at Carver Center. Coach
Mark Beinborn's club improved to 2-0 on the season, while Monmouth dropped to 0-2 on the year.
After sophomore
Clare Kramer (Prophetstown HS, Lyndon, Ill.) put the Vikings up 2-0, Maddie Dohleman answered with a conventional three-point play to give the Scots their only lead of the game. Kramer scored the next two baskets and Augustana would lead the rest of the way.
Izzy Anderson's
(Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) three-point play with 43 seconds left in the first gave the hosts their biggest lead of the period at 17-9, but Rebecca Gallis' trey at the 21-second mark drew Monmouth to within 17-12 at the end of the quarter.
The margin grew to as much as 12 points in the second period. A
Mikayla Fallon (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) field goal put the Vikings on top 26-14, but the Scots eventually whittled the deficit to 34-28 2:10 before halftime. Sophomore
Meghan Stovall (Broomfield HS, Broomfield, Colo.) closed the quarter with a field goal and two free throws to send Augustana to the locker room with a 39-28 lead.
The margin never dipped below double digits in the second half. The Vikings' pressure forced seven turnovers in the third quarter and a
Carly McCameron (Antioch HS, Antioch, Ill.) free throw extending the lead to 26 points (62-36) late in the period. Monmouth split a pair of free throws with two seconds left and trailed 62-37 after three.
Beinborn cleared his bench with four minutes left and a 77-44 lead. Freshman
Alexis Jones (Epic Academy, Chicago, Ill.) tallied Augustana's last field goal, which pushed the margin to 83-48—the largest of the game. A Gallis three-pointer in the last minute accounted for the final.
Fallon paced a balanced offensive attack with 14 points on five-of-nine shooting. Kramer (6-8 from the floor) and classmate
Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) (5 of 10 field goals) were in double figures as well, with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Senior center
Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) added eight points. She also blocked six shots and shared the team lead in rebounds with McCameron. Each grabbed seven. Seniors
Jen VanWatermeulen (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) and Fallon were chief among Viking thieves, recording five and four steals, respectively.
Augustana finished 33 of 72 (.458) from the field, two of 11 (.182) from long range and 15 of 21 (.714) at the foul line. The Vikings held the Scots to 21 of 63 (.333) shooting, outrebounded them 45 to 39 and turned it over 18 times to 30 for the visitors.
Beinborn's club travels to Dubuque, Iowa on Tuesday, November 22 to face the Spartans of the University of Dubuque in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
