Women open season with 102-61 win over Rockford with four in double figures

Sophomore Corrie Reiley led the Vikings with 19 points on Tuesday evening
in the Carver Center as Augustana defeated Rockford 102-61 in the 
season opener for both teams.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – It took a while for Augustana to get going in its season-opener at home with Rockford on Tuesday, November 15 but once the Vikings clicked they were hard to stop. The final result was an impressive 102-61 non-conference win over Rockford in the Carver Center.
 
Head coach Mark Beinborn's team put four players in double digits and a grand total of 15 of the 16 players who saw action scored points. Sophomore Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) led the way with 19 points on six of 11 from the floor, two of five from three point range and five of six from the free throw line. She also had four rebounds, one assist, one blocked shot and one steal.
 
Senior Kaycee Kallenberger (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and senior Mikayla Fallon (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) had 14 points and senior Jennifer VanWatermeulen (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) dropped in 11. Kallenberger pulled down 11 rebounds with five blocked shots, four steals and one assist. Fallon had a rebound and VanWatermeulen picked up four steals, two assists and two rebounds.
 
Augustana jumped out to an early 11-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game but the Regents cut the margin to just three points (20-17) on a basket by Mallorie Getzelman with 1:41 left in the first quarter. The Vikings closed the period on a 5-0 run thanks to a three-point basket by VanWatermeulen at 1:03 and a basket by sophomore Izzy Anderson (Alleman Catholic HS, Rock Island, Ill.) at :41.
 
Getzelman, who finished the game with 30 points, scored with 7:29 left in the second quarter to make it a three-point game (27-24) once gain but Augustana responded with a 19-9 run to end the half. That allowed the Vikings to take a 46-33 lead into intermission.
 
Augustana outscored Rockford 31-10 in the third quarter to completely put the game away and then sealed things with a 25-18 advantage in the fourth.
 
The Vikings shot .425 (37-87) from the floor and just .667 (20-30) from the free throw line but held a commanding 59-38 lead in rebounding. They also forced 28 turnovers.
 
Senior Olivia Mayer (Libertyville HS, Green Oaks, Ill.) led the team with four assists while sophomore Scooter Lopez (Mountain Vista HS, Highlands Ranch, Colo.) had three off the bench.
 
Augustana will be in action again on Saturday, November 19 at home against Monmouth with tip-off set for 5:00 p.m.
