ELMHURST, Ill. – Seniors
Amy Kalkhoff (Clear Creek Amana HS, North Liberty, Iowa) and
Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) led the way with 11 kills each Tuesday, as Coach
Kelly Bethke's Augustana volleyball team knocked off 15th-ranked Elmhurst in five sets at Faganel Hall. The Vikings improved to 14-4 overall and 2-1 in the CCIW, while the host Bluejays dropped to 13-6 on the year and 3-1 in the league.
Although Elmhurst took the first set 25-21, Bethke's bunch set the tone for the evening by battling back from a 24-11 deficit. The Vikings won 10 consecutive points—nine with sophomore
McKenzie Zambrano (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) on the serve—before Melissa Nava's kill finally provided set point.
The second game was nip-and-tuck. Neither team managed a lead of more than two points until the Bluejays went up 23-20. Augustana won six of the final seven points, however, to even the match at a set apiece. A pair of Kalkhoff kills and a

The visitors jumped to a 10-4 lead in set three and Elmhurst never got closer than three points the rest of the way. A VanEarwage kill capped a 25-19 Viking win.
The Bluejays bolted to a 10-1 lead and went on to a 25-16 fourth-set win. Hannah Davis' kill sent the teams to a fifth game.
The final set was tied at every score one through eight before Augustana took three straight points—the last two on kills by junior
Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.)—and went on to win 15-11. Match point came on a VanEarwage block.
