Freshman Grace Bialobok had a match-high 11 kills in
Augustana's straight set win over Northland Saturday
in Platteville, Wisconsin.
PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The Augustana volleyball team extended its winning streak to a season-long six matches Saturday, defeating Northland in straights sets at the Wisconsin-Platteville Tournament. The Vikings' streak was snapped in their second contest of the day, a 3-0 setback to Central. Coach
Kelly Bethke's outfit is now 20-6 on the year heading into a 7:30 p.m. non-conference match at Dubuque on Tuesday, October 18.
AUGUSTANA 3, NORTHLAND 0 (25-15; 25-13; 25-22)
Freshman
Grace Bialobok (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Homewood, Ill.) paced the Augustana attack against the Lumberjills, recording 11 kills in a 25-15, 25-13, 25-22 victory.
Trailing 4-3 in the opening set, the Vikings rattled off 11 straight points to go up 14-4. Junior
Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) started the run with a kill and was on the serve for the next 10 points. Senior
Amy Kalkhoff (Clear Creek Amana HS, North Liberty, Iowa) had four kills in the spurt. Northland would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way. Set point came on a Bialobok kill.
Augustana led 8-7 in game two before winning eight of the next nine points and eventually cruising to a 25-13 win.
It looked like the Luberjills would extend the match to a fourth set when they jumped out to a 17-7 lead in game three. However, a Bialobok kill sparked a string of 10 consecutive points won by the Vikings. By the time senior
Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) was finished serving, her team had achieved a 17-all tie. A
Maissie Musick (Camp Point Central HS, Camp Point, Ill.) kill finally gave Augustana the lead for good at 20-19 and one by Bialobok accounted for match point.
Bethke spread the playing time around. After Bialobok, no Viking recorded more than six kills. Sophomore
McKenzie Zambrano (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) led Augustana with 16 assists and Lindaman chipped in with a dozen. Zambrano and Westermeyer each served up a pair of aces and sophomore libero
Sierra Rood (Lena-Winslow HS, Lena, Ill.) led the Vikings defensively with 21 digs.
CENTRAL 3, AUGUSTANA 0 (25-19; 29-27; 25-23)
After a 25-19 win in game one, Central sewed up the sweep with tight 29-27 and 25-23 wins in the final two sets.
Senior
Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) led Augustana with nine kills. Westermeyer and sophomore
Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) added six each.
Lindaman had a team-high 16 assists and a match-best five service aces. Zambrano was right behind with 15 assists.
Kalkhoff recorded a match-high 20 digs, with VanEarwage and Rood contributing 10 apiece. Senior
Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) had three solo blocks.
