Second quarter lapse costs Vikings in 98-75 loss at North Central

Freshman Corrie Reiley came off the bench and scored a career high 19 points on 
Wednesday in Augustana's 98-75 loss at North Central.

NAPERVILLE, Ill. – A sluggish second quarter was the deciding factor on Wednesday, January 13 in Augustana's 98-75 loss at North Central in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin action in Naperville, Illinois. The Vikings trailed by just three (24-21) after the first quarter but the Cardinals broke the game open by outscoring Augustana 32-14 in the second stanza.
 
The Vikings had it down to a five point game at 7:45 in the second after sophomore Victoria Allen (Eureka HS, Wildwood, Mo.) made a basket to make the score 32-27. North Central ripped off the next 12 points and after Michaela Reedy nailed a three point basket at 4;37 the margin was 17 (44-27). Eventually the lead would grow to 22 (55-33) in the final minute before the half ended with the Cardinals in front 56-35.
 
Trailing 61-39 with 8:12 left in the third, Augustana went on a 17-8 run to cut the advantage to 13 (69-56) after a three point field goal by junior Jennifer VanWatermeulen (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) with :42 left. However, North Central finished the period with a 6-2 run and led by 17 (75-58) at the end of three.
 
The Vikings did cut the lead to 13 (84-71) with 3:31 left in the game on a three point field goal by Corrie Reiley (Prophetstown HS, Prophetstown, Ill.) but North Central ended the game with a 14-4 run to account for the final score of 98-75.
 
Reilley had the best offensive night of her young career with 19 points and four rebounds to lead Augustana. Senior Marissa Pezzopane (Addison Trail HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) added 16 points while Allen had 11 and VanWatermeulen chipped in with 10.
 
North Central had six players in double figures with Jamie Cuny leading the way with 19 points. The Cardinals launched 38 three point field goals in the game and connected on 16 for .421 shooting. They also outrebounded Augustana 50-42.
 
The Vikings fall to 6-9 overall and 1-3 in the CCIW while North Central is 8-7 and 2-2. Augustana will travel to Kenosha, Wisconsin on Saturday, January 16 to take on Carthage in a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
