Vikings win first conference match of the season

Junior Nicole Morrissey had 20 kills Tuesday as Augustana scored a
five-set win over 23rd-ranked Illinois Wesleyan in Bloomington, Illinois.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. –After competing in the Illinois Wesleyan Tournament this past weekend and going 2-0, Augustana was back in action in Bloomington, competing in its first CCIW match of the season against 23rd-ranked Illinois Wesleyan on Tuesday, September 22. After five close games, the Vikings came away with their first conference victory of the year (25-19; 21-25; 21-25; 27-25; 15-8), defeating the Titans 15-8 in game five. Augustana's record is now 7-4 overall and 1-0 in the CCIW. IWU fell to 10-3 on the year.
 
After winning the first game of the match 25-19, the Vikings fell behind, allowing Illinois Wesleyan to win games two and three with the score of 21-25 for both. However, the Vikings bounced back from their rut and beat the Titans in a close game four 27-25. Game five was back and forth, until the change at point eight. An attack error by Illinois Wesleyan's Tyler Brown and a kill by freshman Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) helped the Vikings pull ahead by two and eventually take the win.
 
VanEarwage and senior Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) each collected nine kills on the night, while junior Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) had another big match, pounding a match high of 20 kills.
 
Senior libero Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) was credited with 27 digs and eight assists. Sophomore Emily Westermeyer (Huntley HS, Huntley, Ill.) chipped in with 10 digs as well.
 
Junior Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) accounted for 23 assists and 13 digs. Her compliment at setter, senior Jordan Hampel, (Hilliard Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) came in right behind with 21 assists and an outstanding 16 digs.
 
Illinois Wesleyan got 23 kills and 15 digs out of Kayleigh Block and 33 assists from Colleen Rynne.
 
The Vikings play next on Friday, September 25 against Wisconsin-Stevens Point in Elmhurst, Illinois at 6:30 p.m.
