Freshman Caitlyn Schaffer won in both singles and doubles on
Wednesday, September 23 as Augustana defeated Illinois
Wesleyan 9-0 to stay undefeated at 9-0 overall and 4-0 in the
College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin.ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana stayed perfect on the season with a workmanlike 9-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan in College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin women's tennis action on Wednesday, September 23 at the Lower Campus Courts. The Vikings are now 8-0 overall and 4-0 in the CCIW while the Titans fall to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Despite a minor scare at number one doubles, head coach
Jon Miedema's team was in control throughout the match. The number one team of junior
Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and senior
Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) struggled against the Illinois Wesleyan team of Dana Dray and Randi Wilson before finally prevailing 8-4.
The other two doubles matches were lopsided in favor of Augustana. At number two sophomore
Mollie Magee (Olathe East HS, Overland Park, Kan.) and junior
Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) won 8-0 over Brianna Dao and Allie Spontak. The number three match went to the Vikings' team of freshmen
Madeline Lombardi (Edwardsville HS, Glen Carbon, Ill.) and
Caitlyn Schaffer (Kenwood Academy, Chicago, Ill.) by a score of 8-1 over Kayleigh Ruffolo and Sam Robinson.
Leading 3-0 heading into the singles portion of the match, Augustana was convincing up and down the lineup. Schaffer came off the court first as a double winner as she beat Ruffolo 6-1; 6-0 at number five. Magee beat Wilson 6-1; 6-0 at number three to clinch the victory for the Vikings.
Dana Goggin beat Dao 6-0; 6-0 at number two and junior
Vicki Andonova (Downers Grove South HS, Westmont, Ill.), back in action after suffering from an early season injury, defeated Robinson 6-3; 6-0 at number six. MacDonald beat Spontak 6-2; 6-0 at number four and
Lauren Goggin completed the 9-0 sweep in the team score with a 6-1; 6-0 victory over Dray at number one.
Augustana will be off this weekend and won't be in action again until the ITA Midwest Championship in Kalamazoo, Michigan on October 2-3.
