Vikings drop volleyball opener to 25th ranked Coe in four sets

Senior Martha Murray recorded 14 kills as Augustana fell to
25th ranked Coe 3-1 in the 2015 season opener in Cedar 
Rapids, Iowa on Tuesday, September 1.

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA- Augustana fell to 25th ranked Coe College by a score of 3-1 in the volleyball season opener on Tuesday, September 1 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The Vikings fell behind by a count of 2-0, losing 25-15 and 25-19 in the first two sets. They rallied in the third, winning 25-22 before dropping the fourth game 25-15.
 
Coe had a tremendous night on the offensive side of the net, hitting at a .354 clip with 63 kills in 130 total attempts with just 17 errors. In contrast, Augustana hit .154 with 39 kills in 130 attempts with 19 errors. The Vikings did not record a block the entire match.
 
Senior Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) led the Viking offense with 14 kills, racking up a .229 hitting percentage on the night. Sophomore  Maissie Musick (Camp Point HS, Ill.) totaled the highest hitting percentage with a .429 and seven kills on 14 attempts with just one error. Freshman Taryn VanEarwage  (Rock Island HS, Ill.) made her collegiate debut tallying six kills and five digs.
 
Senior Jordan Hampel (Hilliard-Davidson HS, Hilliard, Ohio) led the team in setting assists with 19, four digs, and a service ace.  Junior Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) followed close behind, contributing 14 setting assists, three digs, and a service ace.
 
Senior Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.) was one dig shy of breaking the career school record of 1,650 career digs set by Callyn Dittmar in the 2000-03 seasons. Siebert had a total of 16 digs and now has 1,649 for her career.
 
Coe was led on offense by Mackenzie Harbaugh, who recorded 42 assists, 14 digs and 13 kills. Brianna Smith added 16 kills and 13 digs, while Lauren Himan rounded out the Kohawk offense with 15 kills.
 
Augustana will be in action again on Friday, September 4 in Bluffton, Ohio at the Bluffton Tournament. The Vikings will play Alma and Bluffton on Friday and then face Ohio Northern and Heidelberg on Saturday. Augustana will open the home portion of its season on Tuesday, September 8 against Wartburg at 7:00 p.m. at the Carver Center.
