Junior Nicole Morrissey recorded 21 kills as Augustana split two matches at the
Viking Classic Friday at Carver Center,ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Augustana split its two matched Friday at the Viking Classic at Carver Center. The Vikings dropped a five-set match to St. Thomas in their opener, but rebounded with a three-set victory over Dubuque to wrap up tournament play.
St. Thomas 3, Augustana 2, (15-25; 25-20; 25-23; 16-25; 15-11) In five tough games against an evenly-matched St. Thomas team, Augustana fell short in the last game, losing 15-11. As a result, the Vikings lost 3-2 to the Tommies on Friday, September 18 in the Carver Center. The match was the first of the Viking Classic. St. Thomas improved to 4-6 on the season and the Vikings fell to 3-4.
Augustana opened with a 25-15 victory in the first set before losing the second and third sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-23, respectively. The Vikings won game four with a score of 25-16. In the decisive fifth set, Augustana fell to the Tommies 15-11, despite leading 8-3 at the change.
Despite the tough loss, the Vikings were solid defensively behind senior libero
Kylie Siebert (Kaneland HS, Sugar Grove, Ill.), who picked up 21 digs, and junior
Amy Kalkhoff (Clear Creek Amana HS, North Liberty, Ill.
), who added 15.
On the offensive side of the ball, senior
Martha Murray (Evanston HS, Evanston, Ill.) contributed 16 kills and junior
Nicole Morrissey (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) cranked out 14 from the right side.
Junior
Hannah Lindaman (North Scott HS, Eldridge, Iowa) was credited with 33 assists and 14 digs.
Senior
Jordan Hampel (Hilliard HS, Hilliard, Ohio) accumulated 15 assists and 4 digs.
St. Thomas' Taylor Lewis and Brooke Reichart both had 13 kills each on the night, while Rebecca Hawkins had 17 assists.
Augustana 3, Dubuque 0 (25-20; 25-16; 25-19) Coach
Kelly Bethke's club bounced back with a three-set win over Dubuque in its second match of the Classic. Augustana evened its record at 4-4 on the season, while Dubuque dropped to 5-7.
Juniors
Jacqueline Kibir-Evans (Trinity HS, Forest Park, Ill.) and Morrissey led the way offensively in the tournament finale. Kibir-Evans had a team-high eight kills and Morrissey added seven. Neither committed a single attack error.
Lindaman and
Jordan Hampel recorded 17 and 12 assists, respectively. Lindaman and freshman
Taryn VanEarwage (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) each had a pair of service aces, while Hampel delivered one.
Siebert's 17 digs paced the Vikings defensively. Lindaman and Hampel each added nine. Kibir-Evans had a solo block and an assist.
On Saturday, September 19, Augustana travels to Bloomington, Illinois, where the Vikings will face Franklin at noon and Knox at 2:00 p.m.
