CHICAGO, Ill. – Augustana jumped out in front 15-0 after three weight classes Saturday, but Chicago rallied to claim six of the last seven matches and defeat the Vikings 21-18 at the Ratner Center. Coach Eric Juergens' 29th-ranked squad falls to 7-6 in dual meets this season, while the Maroons improve to 6-3 on the year.
 
With the score tied at 18-18 through nine bouts, it all came down to the 285-pound match. Chicago's Mario Palmisano got the better of Augustana senior John Seaman (Munster HS, Munster, Ind.) by a score of 4-2 to secure the win for the Maroons. The loss was just the ninth of the season for Seaman against 27 wins.
 
After Viking junior Jimmy Panozzo (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was awarded the 125-pound bout via forfeit, 133-pound freshman Brendan Gould (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) improved to 24-10 on the year with a 7-1 decision over Adam Wyeth. Freshman Collin Tomkins (Grandville HS, Grandville, Mich.) gave Augustana a 15-0 lead by pinning Elliot Henderson in 3:30 at 141 pounds. Tomkins picked up his 20th win of the season against 12 losses.
 
Chicago's Michael Sepke started the Maroons' rally with a 6-0 decision over sophomore Matt Sears (Marist HS, New Lenox, Ill.) at 149. Devon Range cut the Vikings' lead to 15-9, pinning sophomore Brian Egan (Buffalo Grove HS, Buffalo Grove, Ill.) in the third period of the 157-pound match.
 
Wins by Brennan King and Nick Ferraro over sophomore Jordan Furiosi (Valley Christian HS, San Jose, Calif.) and senior Jordan Richardson (Grandville HS, Wyoming, Mich.) at 165 and 174, respectively tied the meet at 15-all. King bested Furiosi 13-6 and Ferraro scored an 8-4 decision over Richardson, who dropped to 21-16 on the season.
 
Senior Thomas Reyhons (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) regained the lead for Augustana at 184, improving to 23-6 with a 4-1 win over Ryan Walsh. However, sophomore Ethan Benoit (Marist HS, Oak Lawn, Ill.) dropped a 2-1, two-overtime heartbreaker to David Gremling at 197, falling to 18-8 and setting the stage for the winner-take-all bout at 285.
 
On February 19, Juergens' crew travels to Elmhurst, Illinois to compete in the CCIW Championships.
